Richard Roddewig

Richard J. Roddewig is Managing Director of JLL Value and Risk Advisory. Mr. Roddewig is both a real estate economist and an appraiser, as well as an attorney, with extensive experience in the valuation of many types of complex properties and less-than-fee interests. Mr. Roddewig is one of the most experienced appraisers in the United States in the analysis of the impact of environmental contamination on real estate prices, values and markets. He also has more than 40 years experience the valuation of conservation and historic preservation easements. Between 1988 and 2017, Mr. Roddewig was President of Clarion Associates, Inc., one of the most experienced firms in the United States in the valuation of complex real estate assets with a focus on litigation-related assignments. Mr. Roddewig and Clarion Associates, Inc. merged into JLL in November of 2017.
Mr. Roddewig directs a national real estate appraisal and consulting practice focused on expert testimony in complex litigation and administrative review proceedings. He has worked on assignments in more than 40 states and a number of foreign countries, and currently holds appraisal licenses in 12 states. He has testified as an expert witness in a variety of federal district courts, in U.S. Bankruptcy Court, in U.S. Tax Court, and in state courts all across the United States. Among his more notable assignments was expert testimony for Exxon in the Alaska state trial to determine the impact of the Exxon Valdez oil tanker spill on the market value of 1,300 miles of Alaska wilderness coastline and preparation of an expert report for four New Orleans levy districts on the appropriate appraisal techniques to determine the impact of Hurricane Katrina on the value of more than 150,000 properties in New Orleans.

Mr. Roddewig holds the MAI designation from the Appraisal Institute, the CRE designation from the Counselors of Real Estate, and is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. He also is a past Chair of the Land Use Law Committee of the American Bar Association. He has both a Juris Doctor degree and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Chicago, and an undergraduate degree in history and government from the University of Notre Dame.
