A growing neighborhood along the Reno-Sparks border
Northeast Reno is where different cities and qualities convene. Not only do the cities of Reno and Sparks meet here, but urban Washoe County meets with the Sierra Nevada and a humble past is giving way to a promising future. “I always encourage new buyers to look at this area,” Realtor Soni Jackson with Sotheby’s International Realty says. “I call it ‘North Sparks,’ and there’s a big difference between this area and downtown Sparks. It feels like a high desert environment with less landscaping and more of an open valley feel. Your budget gets you more property out there and less concern over deferred maintenance that older homes have.”
Outdoor entertainment and recreation in Northeast Reno
Though much of Northeast Reno consists of residential areas, Teglia's Paradise Park imbues this community with a green heart. Realtor Sandy Gabrielli with Re/Max says, “The Paradise Park is a beautiful park; people race little boats on its ponds.” Geese flock to this park’s miniature lakes, while tree-shaded pedestrian bridges help allow visitors to traverse this patch of nature freely. The park’s playground is easily accessible to students from the neighboring Bernice Mathews Elementary School. Outdoor recreation in Northeast Reno is not limited to exploring this large park. “You also have big events like ‘The Wildest, Richest Rodeo in the West,’ the Reno rodeo, at The Reno Livestock Events Center,” says Realtor Harmony Steingrebe with Coldwell Banker. “There’s also Rancho Drive-in Theatre, the only drive-in in town.”

An older neighborhood undergoing revitalization
Northeast Reno is one of the city’s older neighborhoods. It was developed in the 1940s to house Sparks' industrial workers. Since then, Northeast Reno has acquired a reputation as a prime venue for entry-level homebuyers. Condos built from the 1970s to 1980s vary in price from $130,000 to $260,000, while fully detached properties built from the 1940s to the 1980s sell for between $225,000 and $655,000. “I spent my teenage years living over there; it’s in an area that’s being revitalized,” says Gabrielli. “They call it the Oddie District now, and there’s a lot of new apartment complexes being built and a lot of old buildings being revitalized.” Though Northeast Reno may be in the midst of a major transformation, it still retains the competitive home pricing that comprises much of its appeal. “Many of the properties and even the big box stores are new-feeling, and your bang for your buck is better,” Jackson says. “You can get a bigger home and yard, much bigger than other parts of town.”

Diverse markets and eateries along Oddie Boulevard
Northeast Reno’s location along Oddie Boulevard provides residents with immediate access to shopping and dining. Reno’s cultural diversity is expressed through this neighborhood’s many carnicerias and Asian markets, its Filipino and Korean restaurants and its taqueria and pizza venues. Grocery Outlet provides general grocery conveniences, while smaller shops like Manila Hongkong Store and Carniceria Samber specialize in imported goods. The Wok Chinese Cuisine has become a culinary mainstay in this part of Reno, hosting Asian Community Development Council events as well as becoming a takeout staple due to its competitive prices and large portions. Los Tres Toritos immerses its diners in Mexican culture with its artwork and architecture, and it offers a unique breakfast menu for early birds looking for a helping of eggs with chorizo.
Northeast Reno has an abundance of ethnic eateries including Thai and Japanese.

College prep at Hug High School
Bernice Mathews Elementary School scores a C rating from Niche, while Fred W. Traner Middle School receives a C-minus and Procter R. Hug High School a C-plus. Hug High School offers a college prep curriculum, including the GATE Institute, which invites students to pursue rigorous honors courses and AP-level study.
Community resources
Due to a housing shortage and high costs of living in the Reno-Sparks metro area, Northeast Reno has grappled with poverty and crime for years. Teglia’s Paradise Park, though still popular with families, has especially shared in the surrounding cities' homelessness crises. With a CAP score of 6, Northeast Reno has a higher-than-average risk of crime than the nation at large, which scores a 4. However, both public and private efforts are beginning to make a difference, both in helping the underprivileged and in revitalizing the neighborhood’s older homes. “There are a lot of resources like the Boys and Girls in the neighborhood, and there’s been quite a bit of work there,” Steingrebe says. “Investors are buying up properties and fixing them up; it’s a developing part of town.”
Quick access to downtown and the airport
Northeast Reno is quartered by the junction of Highway 395 and Interstate 80, connecting it to the rest of the Reno-Sparks metro area. Downtown Reno and its medical center sit just 3 miles to the southwest and is accessible both by car and the 2 bus. Reno-Tahoe International Airport is also just a 5-mile drive down Highway 395 and Interstate 580.
Northeast Reno is flat and friendly for bikers to commute around the neighborhood.
Northeast Reno has plenty of bus stations to get you around the city.
