But those who stop in the county seat of Jasper County are welcomed by warm people, a charming downtown and desirable features for many lifestyles. "I was born and raised here, moved away for a few years and then came back because this is the best place to live and the people are all welcoming," says Mayor Jeff Phillips. "Rensselaer also has a bit of everything despite being a smaller city." Riverside parks, ample employers and a collection of restaurants and shops draw new families and keep long-time locals around. "The biggest attraction you're going to find here, though, is the safety and security," says Phillips, the former police chief before becoming mayor. "If you want to raise your family in a nice and safe community with good schools, this is the perfect location."
