One of the city's largest neighborhoods with close university access
The 19th Ward is one of the largest communities in Rochester and began as a milling area called Castletown on the Genesee River. By the late 1890s, it was an urbanized residential neighborhood where medical professionals and skilled workers would live in the city. The community’s proximity to the University of Rochester has been appealing throughout much of its history. “It’s a very interesting neighborhood for investors, we're actually getting them from all over the country looking in the 19th Ward,” says Andrew Hannan, a Rochester local and Realtor with Keller Williams Greater Rochester. “Because of the university and the hospital, it's our biggest employer in the entire county.” Strong Memorial Hospital is connected to the University of Rochester’s School of Medicine and Dentistry and is one of the city’s largest medical centers.

Homes built as far back as the 1890s
The 19th Ward has its own slogan: "Urban by Choice." Most homes come with modest yard space and sidewalks lined by mature shade trees. Though this is a majority owner-occupied neighborhood, renting is also popular here because of the commute to the University of Rochester, just across the river. Home prices run well below the average for New York state, with a unique stock of late 19th- and early 20th-century properties available. Prices range from $50,000 to $250,000 for bungalows, Colonial Revivals, American Foursquares and duplexes. The prices are low because of the age of the homes, and many need some remodeling jobs after purchase. Teardowns in the neighborhood are rare due to the local market. “Building new homes here costs so much more than rebuilding existing homes,” says Hannan. “You're not knocking down a 100-grand [home] and then rebuilding because the cost to do business in New York is very expensive.”

Dining at Thurston Village
The newest development in the 19th Ward is the Brooks Landing Urban Village, a mixed-use corridor of housing units favored by University of Rochester students, and home to some small businesses. Brooks Landing Diner on the southeast edge of the neighborhood is a local breakfast favorite, serving steak and eggs and pancake combo platters. The diner also has a Free Food Board, where patrons can pay for orders and place the receipts on a pinboard for anyone to use for a free meal. 19th Ward residents can drive 4 miles north to Westgate Plaza to buy groceries from Wegmans or dine at restaurants like Rancho Viejo. Many commercial businesses here are locally owned and concentrated along Thurston Road and Chili Avenue. Some options include Caribbean favorites at People's Choice Kitchen or salads to-go at Supreme Salad Bar. Nearby, Thurston Seafood is known for its fried fish.

To the south of the neighborhood is Genesee Valley Park West, which has tennis courts, little league baseball fields, and a playground. There’s also the Genesee Valley Park Sports Complex, with an indoor ice rink. Residents can access the renovated Genesee Riverway Trail from this park, which runs through downtown and farther north to the Upper Falls area. Aberdeen Square and Gardiner Park are smaller pocket parks surrounded by homes. The 19th Ward Community Association regularly hosts events in Aberdeen Square, like the Square Fair, with stands for community organizations and food vendors.

Notable history from the 19th Ward
At the intersection of Post Avenue and Anthony Street is the Asa Anthony House, once home to Susan B. Anthony's cousin. This building was used as a safe house along the Underground Railroad to send formerly enslaved people to freedom and is marked with a historical plaque. The 19th Ward Community Association hosts an annual house tour to teach guests about the history of many homes in the area and to show how far the community has come since its 19th-century roots.
