Historic St. Louis suburb with culture, art and lifestyle attractions
Central West End is a historic hot spot, a culinary incubator and an outdoor oasis. This active St. Louis suburb is less than 5 miles outside of downtown, positioned beside the largest green space in the city and the largest hospital in the state. The edgy enclave is home to many of the city’s trendiest eateries and tech start-ups. The CWE is also known for historic landmarks like the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis, setting the tone for one of the city’s most character-rich communities. "People who come here say, 'It reminds me of the East Coast.' It does have a very East Coast vibe," says Bishop Mark Grimes, a local church pastor, a lifelong St. Louisan, and a 22-year Central West End resident. "When I was growing up, it was more bohemian, but it's become a lot more shirt and tie."

Edgy eats on Euclid
Central West Enders are active during their off hours, taking to the busy streets on nights and weekends to meet with friends at stylish restaurants and connect over craft cocktails at dimly lit bars. Cozy sidewalk cafes buzz with chatter on slow afternoons, and City Foundry lights up in the evening, hosting visitors for live music, booze, and local bites. Highly walkable and bicycle friendly, The CWE also provides easy access to several grocery stores, fitness centers, a movie theater, local shops, and art galleries, some of which have been mainstays for generations. "Everything you could want is there. You have a high-end grocery store, but then you have Aldi at the edge of the CWE," Grimes says.

All's Fair in architecture
The 1904 World's Fair influenced the community’s eclectic architectural landscape. Central West End homes span styles ranging from updated 19th-century stunners to charming townhomes and turn-key condos in sleek high rises with views of downtown St. Louis. Historic houses don turn-of-the-century brickwork in character-rich designs influenced by French Tudors, Colonials, and Greek Revivals – all mixed with a handful of postmodern properties. Modest spots sell for $200,000, and extra-spacious estates climb over $1 million.

Fun and games at Forest Park
The Central West End has several smaller neighborhood parks for day-to-day breaks, but the neighborhood's most popular outdoor attraction is Forest Park. It’s one of the largest in the country, and so close it’s walkable for a few lucky locals. This expansive outdoor space is home to major city attractions like the Saint Louis Art Museum and Zoo. Though the trails and gardens are busiest in the summer, there’s plenty to do year-round, from browsing art exhibitions to golfing at the Highlands or escaping the winter chill in the Jewel Box, a 20th-century botanical garden. Forest Park was home to the 1904 World's Fair and attracts 12 million visitors each year.

Halloween hot spot
The city of St. Louis comes to Central West End for the city’s biggest Halloween bash. The all-day block party starts with family-friendly activities, including a dog costume contest and pumpkin decorating for the kids. The party goes on until midnight, with fire dancers, a DJ and barhopping at the local restaurants. Art is central to Central West End’s identity, hosting monthly Art Strolls that bring gallery tours, live music and performances to the city’s eclectic McPherson Avenue. The local branch of the St. Louis Public Library provides classes, movie nights and day camps, while local art schools and the World Chess Hall of Fame offer monthly art-focused education.
Metro's a class act
Local kids can attend St. Louis Public Schools, which carries a C grade on Niche. While the district's rating and well-documented challenges might give homebuyers pause, there are a wide variety of charter and private school alternatives in and around the area, as well as some exceptional public-school options, including Metro Academic and Classical High School, a standout with a Niche A grade. Metro offers an International Baccalaureate program and Advanced Placement curriculum. Before high school, elementary students may attend Dewey International Studies School and then Long International Middle School. Both carry C-minus grades. Many CWE families take advantage of the highly rated private education options in town, like The Wilson School, one of the oldest and best-performing in the region.
