Revitalization efforts have transformed Botanical Heights
Thanks to a couple of decades of revitalization, Botanical Heights has bloomed into a lively community. Once called McRee Town, more than half of the buildings in the St. Louis neighborhood were vacant as recently as 2000. However waves of renewal by developers brought new home construction, attracting hospital and university employees. Named after the Missouri Botanical Garden found less than a mile to the south, Botanical Heights has transformed into a neighborhood that blends its century of history with modern touches.

New homes mix modern design with century-old row houses
As a result of the recent new development, boxy, contemporary homes with large windows stand across the street from houses built in the 1920s. While the new construction displays modern features such as angular rooflines, their tall, skinny designs meld with the 100-year-old row houses they’re squeezed between. Narrow, fenced-in backyards are wedged between the homes and the alleys that run behind them. Keller Williams Realty St. Louis Broker Associate Nick Maynes says many Botanical Heights residents have California carports, open-air carports with garage doors that serve a dual purpose. “When we have nice weather, you can move your car and have a pavilion in your backyard.” Typical home prices fall between $300,000 and $500,000, though Maynes says it’s possible for houses to fetch nearly $1 million. With less than two months of supply sitting on the market and the average house selling in two weeks, Botanical Heights homebuyers can expect to face a competitive market.

Next, students go 3 miles south of Botanical Heights to attend Long International Middle School, where students and teachers can use 3D printers and virtual reality headsets thanks to the Verizon Innovative Learning Lab on campus. Playgrounds, garden and restaurants all within walking distance
Keep a close eye out for the neighborhood playground, tucked away at the intersection of Thurman Avenue and Blaine Avenue. A scavenger hunt game and a train engine are built into the jungle gym, while a wood puppet theater surrounded by benches allows kids to put on shows for the whole neighborhood. A block away you can sink your hands into the soil and try to grow zucchinis and blackberries at the Botanical Heights Community Garden. Botanical Heights is less than a mile wide, so the playground, garden and collection of eateries are in walking distance of homes. However if residents want to venture outside the neighborhood by car or bus, it’s less than 2 miles to the grounds of the Missouri Botanical Garden, the farmers market at Tower Grove Park or the museums of Forest Park.

The commercial corner offers fresh bread and local flavor
A cluster of restaurants and shops at the intersection of Tower Grove Avenue and McRee Avenue form Botanical Heights’ commercial district. Maynes says Union Loafers is a staple of the neighborhood; the café and bakery is renowned for its French country sourdough, while its chicken and rice soup was named one of the best soups in the city by St. Louis Magazine. While you can visit Union Loafers to stock up on fresh-baked bread, other groceries will need to be picked up at Ruler Foods, a mile outside the neighborhood.
