Why Live in Riverside
Located on the north side of San Angelo, Riverside is bounded by the highly trafficked U.S. Route 87 and the northern dam of the North Concho River. Although the neighborhood sits next to what appears to be a large lake, the area’s climate and landscape aren’t conducive to the presence of abundant water. “We’re not entirely flat, as we’re part of the southern edge of the rolling plains,” says Carl White, San Angelo’s Parks and Recreation Director. “But we could use a dump of water. We were awarded the ‘Fickle Finger of Fate’” from Laugh-In because the lake burned,” he adds, referring to the 1970s sketch comedy show. The particular incident that earned San Angelo that dubious honor was in 1970, when the dried grass at the bottom of the empty O.C. Fisher Reservoir caught on fire, thus the “burning lake” component. Humor aside, Riverside embraces a traditional ranching lifestyle, and industrial wholesalers and other farming retailers line the highway that make up much of the neighborhood.
