This is lower on average than other neighborhoods close to downtown San Antonio, such as the popular Tobin Hill area, where homes range from $400,000 to $800,000.

The shrines and relics of Little Flower Basilica
Locals will not have to travel far for authentic Mexican food. Of the area’s many tacquerias and paleterias, Wicho’s Mexican Street Food on Zarzamora Street is a favorite, both for its bright storefront and its signature burgers and cups of elote. Pop’s Barbocoa on Ruiz Street only opens on Saturday and Sunday mornings, but the Mexican barbeque and tamales are worth the week-long wait. Gardendale is also located just a few blocks from two H-E-B locations on Rosillo Street and Culebra Road. Gardendale is dotted with multiple Catholic and Baptist churches, many of which hold services in Spanish. The historic Little Flower Basilica on Zarzamora Street is perhaps the best-known house of worship in the area. The church, which was built during the Great Depression, hosts monthly public heritage tours for visitors interested in seeing the building’s intricate shrines and relic collections.

Alazan Creek Trail runs along midtown for miles
Gardendale is dotted with urban pocket parks, like Mario Farias Park on Monclova Alley. This green space is popular for its location on the banks of the Alazan and Martinez creeks and its connection to the Alazan Creek Trail.
