Putting the "Grayt" in Grayton Beach
Scenic Highway 30A is lined with picture-perfect coastal communities, but Grayton Beach is a Florida panhandle original. Centered in a 20-mile stretch of coastal dune lakes, Grayton Beach is an eclectic slice of the Emerald Coast known for its art galleries, pristine beaches and natural beauty. “There’s a lot of hippy vibes and a lot of pretty woodworking and wood art,” says Gabrielle Hamilton, the Walton Area Chamber director of operations. “It has a very fun beach vibe, but it’s still outdoorsy.”
Rare, coastal dune lakes at Grayton Beach State Park
Grayton Beach is a natural wonderland. In addition to the white sand beaches and aquamarine waters, the area is home to Western Lake, a 100-acre coastal dune lake and ecological gem. Coastal dune lakes are rare, freshwater ecosystems found in coastal regions, formed by the accumulation of freshwater behind sand dunes. These unique lakes are characterized by their connection to the sea, fluctuating water levels, and diverse flora and fauna. “The dunes are some of the most beautiful in North America. It’s an awesome place to go canoeing,” says Albert Baeza, a broker associate with RE/MAX Gulf Coast Realty. “A lot of people ride bikes and go bird watching, fishing, boating and stand-up paddle boarding. And there’s unbelievable wildlife – whitetail deer, gray foxes, beautiful birds, and there’s even the Florida black bear.” Grayton Beach State Park stretches across nearly 2,000 acres and has four miles of trails for hiking. Anglers are in good company in Grayton Beach, too. Many local fishing guides launch their fishing charter boats directly from the shore, which is a practice unique to Grayton Beach.

Art, food and fun at The Shops of Grayton
Cozy yet distinctive shops, restaurants and art galleries dot Grayton Beach. Black Bear Bread Co. is a favorite choice to start the day and offers coffee, pastries and brunch fare. Hurricane Oyster Bar & Grill is known for its fresh seafood, friendly staff and dollar bills dangling above the bar. Perhaps one of the most well-known establishments is The Red Bar, a beloved dive bar covered head-to-toe in local art, posters, neon lights and disco balls. The Shops of Grayton is filled with boutiques and restaurants. The shopping district showcases some of the area’s local artists and is home to numerous art galleries. Burgeoning artists can create their own glass masterpieces at Shard Shop, and kids can tap into their inner Picasso at Rock, Paper, Scissors. Groceries are available at Publix in South Walton and WaterColor, and Grayton General Store has snacks and beach essentials covered.

Environmental factors
Hurricanes, high winds and flooding can occur in the Florida panhandle, including Grayton Beach. Buildings constructed after 2003 must comply with the Florida building code, which is intended to improve structures' ability to withstand hurricanes and severe weather. Protected sea turtles lay their eggs along the beaches of the Emerald Coast, and most artificial lights are turned off during nesting season to protect baby turtles. The lights can confuse the hatchlings and stop them from heading to the ocean.
