Once a major tobacco manufacturing hub in the 1700s, Cliftondale has been a prominent Saugus village for centuries. Today, the industrial plants no longer exist, and the community is better known for its close-knit atmosphere. “Every village in Saugus has some sort of defining characteristic. You just get to know your neighbors.” She adds that the 600-acre Rumney Marsh Reservation, along Cliftondale’s southern edge, is another draw. “You walk a few blocks away from your house, and you’re suddenly surrounded by places to hike, boat and fish.” Commuters can easily access bus routes, train stations and U.S. Route 1 to reach Boston.
