GreatSchools Rating

GreatSchools Rating
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.

I would like to see a change in how this school's security is, it isn't a very safe place and our security guards do the bare minimum really. Also the school lunches, they are usually cold and while we just got our cafeteria back because they were working on it since the beginning of the year, the food isn't good.

At Hilo High there is a lot of good, like there is some activities and entertainment that goes on. We have wonderful new facilities that are taken care of. There is diversity and a lot of the teachers are really good and nice, some you can tell they don't care as much though. Some things to work on is just the amount of things or events happening to have more students involved and promote the school spirit. One that really does need to be improved is the food that we get from the DOE.

I enjoyed my time at Hilo High School. The best part would be making new friendships and participating in band. The worst would be that we lost 2 years of face to face instruction due to COVID.

Our sons graduated last year and now attend a top university. Over their time at Hilo High the school keeps improving

Hilo High is one awful institution. A new principal was installed a couple of years ago and the school which had a lot of problems to begin with took a further plunge. College counseling is non-existent at this school, not just that, counselors actively sabotage students' efforts to develop resumes...

It's ok, but we are lucky to be able to take college level courses at HCC and UH Hilo. Admin leadership is nonexistent; it's a total shame, as there are good students here, they just need the opportunities.

My son took as many AP classes as he could and was fully ready to thrive at a private East Coast selective university. Performing Arts Learning Center program was a key resource for him, both socially and artistically.
