Hilo High has many great extracurriculars for being involved with the community (KVIKS, Key club, etc.), but the whole "Academy" idea is awful; it's limiting students from taking the classes they want (especially all the art students) into a select few pathways.

Being a senior at Hilo high school it had its ups and downs, but over the years it really helped me find myself, though it could be crazy at times I would be proud to say that I Hilo High alum when I graduate once a Viking always a Viking!

It's an amazing school. Lots of activities to do so we can get involved with others. They do a pretty good job with preparing the students for life after high school. One thing I would like to see changed is security not doing a great job at preventing problems caused by students. The biggest problem caused by students are fights that occurs about 2 -3 times a semester. Another problem are students hanging out inside the bathrooms (usually vaping) during class time and recess/lunch.

Hilo High is one awful institution. A new principal was installed a couple of years ago and the school which had a lot of problems to begin with took a further plunge. College counseling is non-existent at this school, not just that, counselors actively sabotage students' efforts to develop resumes...

It's ok, but we are lucky to be able to take college level courses at HCC and UH Hilo. Admin leadership is nonexistent; it's a total shame, as there are good students here, they just need the opportunities.

My son took as many AP classes as he could and was fully ready to thrive at a private East Coast selective university. Performing Arts Learning Center program was a key resource for him, both socially and artistically.
