Osborne Elementary School at 800 Ringold St. educates about 400 students. One of the few schools in Acres Homes zoned to the Houston Independent School District, Osborne is the home of the “Owlsome” Owls, where children come first. Built in 1961 to relieve overcrowding at Wesley Elementary, Osborne occupies a 5.9-acre parcel of land. Named for educator and philanthropist John Osborne, the pre-kindergarten through fifth grade school has a proud tradition of producing citizens such as lawyers, teachers, doctors and other professionals who benefit the community. Perhaps due to its high percentage of English-language learners, Osborne’s latest test scores are below the state average. The school is attempting to increase student learning and test performance through its dual-language program. The Dual Language Program is a bilingual program for Spanish-speaking students and a foreign language immersion program for English-speaking students. In two-way classrooms, native Spanish and native English speakers are taught together to develop full bilingualism and biliteracy for both groups of learners. Dual-language learning offers academic, cognitive and social benefits. Bilingual students develop higher levels of critical thinking and problem-solving skills, enhanced creativity and increased ability to concentrate.
