The Sumner Avenue School is a public elementary school located on Sumner Avenue in the Forest Park neighborhood of Springfield. Home to the Koala Bears, the school serves over 500 children in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. The main school building houses students in kindergarten through fifth grade while a separate wing houses the preschool students. The school is known for its one-time student, Theodor Seuss Geisel, who attended the school and went on to become one of the most successful children’s book writers of all time, Dr. Seuss. Originally constructed around 1910, the school underwent renovations around 1998 to upgrade the facility and accommodate more students. In addition to core instruction in math, reading, science and social studies, students can also participate in before-school and after-school clubs and tutorial programs. Activities include Science Lab, Student Council and the Recycling Team. The school also features a fully-equipped computer lab, a Cornerstone Literacy initiative and an excellent faculty—all in an effort to create a positive environment where all students strive for excellence.

This school is a joke! The best thing that happened to this school is Mr. Timothy Garvey. They have the worst staff and facility you’d ever experience. Their special education department is a joke so are the counselors. They are always in non compliance for not following IEP’s. And let’s not forget...

Summer ave is a wonderful, welcoming school. The teachers are simply amazing and so caring towards the children. They make the best of what little funding they have and I just wished they had more. I do wish they would give more homework but overall they’re doing a great job!

My son comes home bruised and no one knows what happened And I'm so upset what do I do. I've called the school the bus ..this is crazy he's non verbal autistic..and it's outrageous

This is a lovely school. My son was welcomed with open arms on day one. His needs were addressed immediately. Most importantly the staff conveys a warm, safe and friendly environment for the kids.
