Like many Semmes neighborhoods, Blackstone sprang up around the railroad and the Semmes Land Company in the early 1900s. The railroad transported yellow pine from the north and provided transportation for the community. Today, residents enjoy quiet, planned residential streets, easy access to nearby amenities, and an involved community. “We’re a small town with a strong community base,” says Elizabeth Lovelady, Events Coordinator and Deputy City Clerk for the City of Semmes. “Anytime we do anything, hold any kind of event, the entire community shows up and comes together.”

Country lots and subdivision plots
Winding tree-lined roads offer privacy to a few ranch-style homes before giving way to massive new subdivisions. D.R Horton’s Magnolia Springs is the largest neighborhood in Blackstone, in addition to the Oak Grove Estates subdivision. Both communities contain a mix of new traditional homes with brick facades and Craftsman-influenced abodes with attached garages, spacious yards and Smart Home Technology. Magnolia Springs also offers spacious sidewalks for strolls, a clubhouse with a fitness room, a community pool and a playground for kids. However, it comes with price tags that range from the mid $200,000s to the $500,000s. Homebuyers should also be aware that Mobile sits in the heart of Dixie Valley, one of three states prone to tornados, and the nearby Hamilton Creek is subject to occasional flooding.

Public schools in Mobile
The Mobile County School District serves this community, scoring average ratings on Niche. Children in the area attend the B-rated Allentown Elementary School, originally a one-room schoolhouse established in 1880. Students then move on to Semmes Middle School, scoring a C, and Mary G. Montgomery High School with a C-plus rating. For some hands-on educational experiences, Linda’s Learning Farm sits just west of Blackstone. Here, children can milk cows, ride horses, and learn the ins and outs of farm upkeep. Regarding higher education, the University of South Alabama also calls Mobile home.
Allentown Elementary School serves students in grades K-5.
Semmes Middle School has 1,300 students enrolled.

Outdoor escapes at Semmes Municipal Park
Kids escape the Alabama heat at the Semmes Municipal Park, which features a fun and colorful splash pad. Fast-food chains and eclectic local eateries
Residents must drive to reach nearby shops and restaurants. Walmart Supercenter and a range of fast food and chain restaurants are scattered along U.S. Route 98. Yet, locals can find some gems along the way, like Sabai Thai Cuisine and Pedro’s Tacos & Tequila Bar for margaritas. Winn-Dixie is the closest grocery store along Schillinger Road. Head south for more restaurants and major retailers like Tractor Supply Co., Target, and the eclectic Mobile Flea Market. More upscale restaurants are found along Airport Boulevard, like the popular Roma Cafe for Italian fare. Due to its secluded location, Blackstone is a car-dependent community. U.S. Route 98 is the main roadway that connects residents to downtown Mobile, about 15 miles away. Howells Ferry Road and Schillinger Road also lead to nearby amenities. Those looking to travel further can catch a flight at Mobile Regional Airport, just 6 miles away. Other essential establishments are also nearby, like USA Health Providence Hospital and numerous houses of worship, such as the Harmony Baptist and Grace Baptist churches.
