Suffolk is a coastal city located on the Nansemond River, which winds and weaves its way deep into the heart of town. Today, Suffolk is one of the largest in the state as far as land area, but it hasn’t always been that way. In 1974, the city of Suffolk merged with Nansemond County, growing from 2 square miles to about 430 square miles.
