Fort Harrison no longer stands, but its legacy lives on. The site of a major battle in the War of 1812, today the area is known as Fort Harrison Villa-White Oak Place, a quiet corner of Terre Haute only five minutes from shops and restaurants, plus two major employers, Indiana State University and Union Hospital. “A lot of people will buy houses and rent them out for the nurses,” says Abby Meehan, a Terre Haute native and real estate agent with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Newlin-Miller Realtors. The area is also near the historic Twelve Points neighborhood, a burgeoning arts and entertainment hub. “It’s a little section up north where they’re getting new restaurants. There’s a new farmers market that just came in, and they’re trying to make it as nice as south and east Terre Haute,” Meehan says.
