German and Dutch immigrants settled their homes and founded farms, and although centuries have passed, the spirit of farming and community have never left. Shaun Van Doren is president of the Tewksbury Historical Society and the township historian. His family has been in Tewksbury for over eight generations. “We are diverse, but people see the long-standing family roots,” Van Doren says. “A lot of families in Tewksbury and in Hunterdon County can trace their histories back generations. There were primarily fruit farms and orchards; then there was a transition to dairy farms, and now, equestrian and agricultural farms. There are probably as many horses as there are people here.” While the slow and serene lifestyle is a major draw, residents also move into the area for Tewksbury’s highly rated schools, spacious lots and interstate access. It’s the small-town atmosphere people want, with modern amenities close by. “You can buy a 200-year-old home and take the
