Cool Washington, D.C. neighborhood with a mix of old and new
Young families walk their kids to school, pet owners take their dogs out to play at Alethia Tanner Park, and young professionals kick back and enjoy a beer at Lost Generation Brewing Company in Eckington, an urban neighborhood in northeast Washington, D.C. “It’s an up-and-coming, affordable neighborhood with people from all walks of life,” says Ashk Adamiyatt, a local real estate agent at RLAH Real Estate. “I’ve known people who’ve lived there for 40 years, and they’re the most wonderful neighbors you could ever expect. They’re all friendly. They love the neighborhood, and they like the improvements that have been done there.”

Renovated row homes and condos
Eckington has a mix of renovated duplexes and row homes from the early 1900s and recently built condos and apartment buildings. “The row homes give you access to a backyard and parking, which I think is one reason that neighborhood is so popular,” Adamiyatt says. He also explains that many developers have bought up homes to do extensive renovations and sometimes convert them into multi-unit dwellings. “They redo row homes to have modern, open floor plans,” Adamiyatt says. Going for between $750,000 and $1.5 million, row homes with modern interiors often have colorful, freshly painted exteriors, fenced-in backyards, and original details like dormer windows and pointed spires. Two-bedroom condo units go for between $500,000 and $700,000.

Alethia Tanner Park, MBT Trail and the Bouldering Project
Alethia Tanner Park opened in 2020 and is a popular gathering spot in Eckington, surrounded by apartment complexes. Murals add color to the area, featuring a lawn, playground equipment with shades and a dog park. “It’s a very pet-friendly neighborhood. A lot of people buy a place in a high-rise condo, and it’s important to them that they’re allowed to have pets. The dog park helps a lot towards that goal,” Adamiyatt says. The dog park and Alethia Tanner Park are also along the Metropolitan Branch Trail, an 8-mile paved pedestrian and bike trail that runs through D.C. to Silver Spring, MD. The Bouldering Project, a climbing and multi-purpose gym, is also in Eckington. “We always have people coming in from Virginia, Maryland, and definitely D.C., especially Eckington because we’re one of the closest gyms in the surrounding area,” says Mark Regini, Operations Supervisor at the facility.
The Metropolitan Branch Trail runs through Eckington, connecting the neighborhood.
