Why Live in Does
Does is a neatly organized residential pocket a mile from downtown Waterloo. The neighborhood's mix of older homes include American Foursquares, Victorians, minimal traditionals and bungalows. Many date back to the early 20th century. Some investors have converted single-family properties into duplexes to rent them out. Businesses such as Kwik Star convenience store and Gyro Hut, as well as neighborhood institutions such as Jay's Barber Shop and St. Ansgar Lutheran Church, are within walking distance of homes. Balkan Café and Grocery is nearby for Bosnian cuisine. Downtown restaurants like The Brown Bottle are just a mile away. The neighborhood is also near major shopping hubs such as Crossroads Mall and big-box stores like Target and Walmart. Sidewalks lined with grass and mature trees connect Does to downtown attractions, including the Waterloo Public Library and the RiverLoop Amphitheatre, which hosts events like Cinema on the Cedar. The Waterloo Urban Farmers Market is also nearby, operating on Sundays from May to October. Surrounding green spaces include Liberty Park, which has a playground and open areas for picnics and soccer practices. A mixed-use trail runs near the Cedar River between downtown and the Riverview Recreation Area. The recreational area is a popular place for fishing, kayaking and forested hiking with designated tracks for dirt bikes and other off-highway vehicles. There are a couple of bus stops on 11th and South Streets. U.S. Route 218 borders the neighborhood, leading to John Deere and Cedar Falls to the north, and Interstate 280 and U.S. Route 20 to the south.
