Why Live in Walnut
Walnut, a small neighborhood on the northeast side of the Cedar River in Waterloo, is home to about 600 residents who are actively working to improve their community. The neighborhood is conveniently located just half a mile north of downtown Waterloo, making it easy for residents to access the expanding commercial district along Fourth Street. U.S. Highway 63 borders Walnut to the west, providing straightforward commuting options. Despite its many advantages, the area lacks sufficient public transportation, with buses stopping early in the evening. Local amenities include Hometown Foods, a supermarket known for its international ingredients, and neighborhood dining options like Sookie’s for breakfast and Chuckster's for soul food. Downtown Waterloo offers additional dining experiences, including Jameson’s Irish pub, Screaming Eagle, and El Patron. Housing in Walnut features a mix of early 1900s architectural styles such as minimal traditional, ranch, Queen Anne, and Foursquare, alongside some newer builds. The neighborhood has a range of fixer-uppers, empty lots, and renovated homes, with prices starting as low as $20,000. The city is working to increase homeownership through the Waterloo Down Payment Program, which offers financial assistance and education for first-time homebuyers. Sullivan Memorial Park, located to the north, provides recreational facilities including a playscape, baseball diamond, basketball court, and picnic area, making it a popular spot for community gatherings and after-school activities.
