Suburban living in Shadow Mountain
Shadow Mountain is a suburb in the Salt Lake Valley with amenities like well-known parks, large homes and local restaurants. The community is surrounded by the Oquirrh Mountains and is 16 miles from Salt Lake City. Its namesake park is in the heart of the neighborhood, within walking distance of many homes. “The area’s vibes are great for kids and teenagers because they have easy access to parks,” says Howard Freiss, Real Estate Agent for RE/MAX, who has lived there for 43 years. And like many suburban neighborhoods, traffic can be an issue during busy hours, but it's especially difficult here because of Its proximity to the airport. “Traffic going this far west can be a little hard to get through, especially during rush hour,” Says Michael Wolters, a Realtor with Keller Williams Salt Lake City, who’s been selling homes for over two decades.

Getting around on Grizzly Way
“It’s a breeze to travel by bike or car in Shadow Mountain,” says Marie Magers, public information manager for the City of West Jordan, who lives in the area. “Everything you need is easily accessible.” Grizzly Way runs through the heart of the neighborhood, but to reach downtown Salt Lake City, drivers hop on U.S. Route 85 and 154, which both run north to south. U.S. Route 154 is on the other side of South Valley Regional Airport. The neighborhood sits next to the airport, but it does not offer domestic flights. “It’s all smaller aircraft leaving here, so noise is not an issue for residents,” Wolters says. St. Mark’s Hospital is a 13-mile trip, and the Salt Lake City International Airport is 12 miles north.
Attend the annual Western Stampede
During the first weekend in July, locals head 4 miles east to Veterans Memorial Park for the annual Western Stampede, featuring a professional rodeo, a carnival and fireworks. Rodeo events include steer wrestling, team roping and bull riding. Adults can ride roller coasters and a Ferris wheel at the carnival, while kids can ride flying saucers or a circus train. On the 4th of July, families enjoy watching fireworks at the northwest section of the park.
Weather concerns in Shadow Mountain
The entire Salt Lake Valley area experiences air quality issues, especially in the summer and winter. Due to its topography, polluted air gets trapped in the area, negatively affecting ozone levels. The Utah Department of Air Quality constantly monitors the quality and works to reduce air pollution. Since it has an arid climate, the area also deals with wildfire season from July to October.
