Why Live in Saint James Village

From above, Oleander Drive and College Road intersect like an “X” on a treasure map. But instead of buried gems and jewels, it marks the center of Wilmington. St. James Village sits just north of this convenient spot. “It’s a nice place to live. Everything is pretty easily accessible,” says Lewis Adorno, an employee at the nearby Pomegranate Books. “There are a lot of local businesses, restaurants and nearby parks. Downtown and the beach are about 10 minutes away,” says Adorno, who’s lived in Wilmington for about 15 years. The neighborhood sits across from the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW). Known for its nursing, business and psychology programs, UNCW is the city’s largest university, with about 18,000 students and 1,400 employees. “There’s a strange mix of young and old. People overall are friendly and more laid-back.” Adorno says. There are more apartments in St. James Village than single-family homes, likely due to the neighborhood’s proximity to UNCW. Less than 500 houses, built between the 1930s and early 2000s, rest on the narrow residential streets shaded by tall pine trees. Most homes sit in tight rows on modestly landscaped lots about 1/3 of an acre in
