Salisbury Street is secluded, shaded and suburban

Salisbury Street, often called Worcester's West Side, features some of the city’s best-preserved historic homes. Along its steeper, tree-lined side streets, you’ll find late-19th- and early-20th-century architecture, ranging from Queen Anne to Colonial Revival and Arts and Crafts styles. Most residential roads branch off Highland and Salisbury streets, two busier throughfares, and there isn't much through traffic. So Salisbury Street stays quiet and shaded, while still offering quick access to more active parts of Worcester.

What Salisbury Street’s historic homes look like and cost

No two houses look alike. Some feature bright coats of paint and original bay windows, while others have large front porches or sprawling sunrooms. You’ll see historic Prairie and Arts and Crafts houses alongside midcentury Colonial Revivals and ranch-style homes, and lot sizes are typically larger than Worcester's average. “Usually [people move here] for the variety of housing stock,” says Jeff Burk, broker-owner of Re/Max Vision and a 40-year Worcester resident. “It’s people looking for that older quality, a home on the larger side that they can put their own stamp on.”

Home prices typically start in the high $300,000s for one-story cottages, ranch-style homes and Cape Cods, while two-story houses often begin in the upper $400,000s and can reach $1 million. “The Salisbury Street area comes with some of the highest resale values we see in town,” says Lee Joseph, a broker associate with Coldwell Banker Realty who has sold homes in Worcester for nearly 40 years. “They’re the kind of homes people hold on to.”

Smaller neighborhoods form the Salisbury Street area

While Salisbury Street is often discussed as one neighborhood, it’s made up of smaller historic districts, hillside enclaves and subdivisions. The Massachusetts Avenue Historic District, with sprawling Colonial Revivals, Queen Annes and Shingle Styles, showcases Worcester’s early-20th-century high-style architecture and commands some of the area’s highest price tags. Hammond Heights is also known for its large, historic homes. Westwood Hills is the only subdivision in the area with an HOA. “Their roads are private up there, which is why there’s an HOA to maintain them. There are a lot of brick or stone Tudor homes up there,” Joseph says. “I say up there because it’s a series of streets going uphill.”

Parks, trails and local landmarks within reach

Living in Salisbury Street, you’re never far from things to do. Here are some go-to attractions and outdoor spaces located nearby:

  • Bancroft Tower, a stone monument resembling a medieval castle atop a hill overlooking the neighborhood and a popular hiking spot
  • Moreland Woods, a 21-acre conservation area with nature trails in the northern part of the neighborhood
  • Wetherell Estate Park, within walking distance for some, with a playground and Little League baseball field.
  • Elm Park, just outside the neighborhood, with footbridges, hiking trails, shaded benches and events, including the Elm Park Summer Concert Series
  • Polar Park, home of the Worcester Red Sox minor league baseball team, about 3 miles away

Worcester Public Schools, Notre Dame Academy and two nearby colleges

The highly rated Worcester Public Schools district serves the neighborhood. The district offers school choice through magnet programs, open enrollment and intra-district transfers, with most placements determined by space availability, lotteries or other district policies. The city also offers private options, including the highly rated Notre Dame Academy, an all-girls Catholic School that’s in the neighborhood and serves seventh to 12th-grade students.

Two colleges are nearby: Worcester Polytechnic Institute, one of America’s first engineering and technology colleges, and Assumption University, a four-year, private Roman Catholic school.

Local spots and nearby dining districts offer plenty of options

Along a hill on Pleasant Street is a small row of restaurants, including Espress Yourself Coffee and Westside Steak & BBQ, and there’s a Price Chopper just outside the neighborhood. The neighborhood is near Highland Street, a shopping and dining strip frequented by college students and long-time Worcesterites, with spots like The Boynton Restaurant & Spirits, one of the city’s most popular restaurants. For more dining options, it’s about 3 miles to Downtown Worcester and roughly 4 miles to Shrewsbury Street, which locals call “Restaurant Row.” Green Island, or the Canal District, is about 4 miles southeast and offers a range of trendy spots.

Walkable Worcester neighborhood with quick access to major routes

While some streets have sidewalks and others don’t, the community is by-and-large walkable. Salisbury Street, the road that gives the neighborhood its name, is a major east-west thoroughfare. “When Notre Dame Academy is letting in or out, Salisbury Street can be busier,” Joseph says. “You also have Assumption University and WPI nearby, so at different times of day, you might have more traffic. But, overall, it stays relatively quiet.” Here’s more transportation information:

  • An entrance to Interstate 290, which leads throughout central Massachusetts, is about 4 miles away.
  • Interstate 90 is about 7 miles away and leads roughly 50 miles east to Boston.
  • Union Station, about 3 miles east, offers commuter rail service to Boston.
  • Worcester Regional Airport is about 3 miles west.
  • Boston Logan International Airport is about 55 miles east.
