Established community near Alamo Heights

Full of century-old oak trees, Oak Park Northwood is a suburban enclave in Alamo Heights, known for its art museums, small boutiques and locally owned restaurants. "It's wonderful being near Alamo Heights while still feeling like we have our own identity here," says Gina Eisenberg, president of the Oak Park Northwood Neighborhood Association. "What makes Oak Park Northwood so special is its community spirit and beautiful surroundings," she says, pointing to the neighborhood walkability to the Salado Creek Greenway Trails and Northridge Park.

Biking on the 20-mile Salado Creek Greenway Trail

The 20-mile Salado Creek Greenway Trail winds along the city's waterways. “Our parks and trails really encourage an active, outdoor lifestyle,” Eisenberg says. “One of our board members leads a group of neighbors for walks through our neighborhood streets.” Along Chevy Chase Drive, Northridge Park draws locals for playdates, picnics under the gazebo and morning walks along the trail. Additionally, Fit4Mom North San Antonio hosts stroller stride workouts for new and pregnant mothers at the park.

Alamo Quarry Market has dozens of retailers

Locals are close to shopping centers, grocery stores and restaurants. “For my school-age children, we can walk to the Bee Nice Cream ice cream shop for one-of-a-kind desserts,” Eisenberg says. The neighborhood also features several small businesses, including Unraveled and Second Looks, an upscale men’s resale clothing store. Alamo Quarry Market is an outdoor shopping mall with over 75 high-end retailers and restaurants 2 miles away.On Sunday mornings, the Alamo Heights Farmers Market fills the parking lot across from Whole Foods with local produce, fresh meats and baked goods. The Barn Door Restaurant & Meat Market is a family-owned establishment, opened in 1953, serving sirloin steaks and brunch through Dutch doors. A mile east is The Barbecue Station, a locally owned spot adorned with taxidermy and neon beer logos, known for its smoked ribs, pork and sausage. The closest H-E-B is on Nacogdoches Road, and Target and Walmart Supercenter are about a mile south.

Oak Park Northwood Neighborhood Association organizes events

Large oak trees soften the landscape surrounding Northwood’s condos, townhouses and single-family homes. Ranch- and Prairie-style homes, Spanish Revivals and custom builds line the narrow, winding streets. Condos typically range from around $120,000 to $465,000. Single-family homes sell for $280,000 to nearly $700,000. Larger contemporary and custom-built houses range from $720,000 to over $1.9 million. Properties on Country Lane offer gated sections. The community has an optional Oak Park Northwood Neighborhood Association, which helps organize events.

MacArthur High School offers an Early College Program

The North East Independent School District is ranked the No. 7 best district in San Antonio and earns an A on Niche. “The quality of education in this area is one of the reasons so many families choose to call Oak Park Northwood home,” Eisenberg says. The district focuses on college preparation at an early age and offers 10 magnet programs held at multiple school campuses. Northwood Elementary School has an A-minus grade and is home to a Gifted and Talented program beginning in kindergarten that offers Dual Language and English as a Second Language. These programs extend to Garner Middle School, which has a B-minus Niche grade. MacArthur High has a B-plus grade and an Early College Program, where students can earn an associate degree and transfer credits to a four-year university. They can also take career and technical education courses to gain industry certification.

Hundreds gather in the summer for the Fourth of July Parade

Northwood hosts events throughout the year organized by the Oak Park Northwood Neighborhood Association. “Our Fourth of July Parade is a highlight every year. We are even featured on TV newscasts,” Eisenberg says. “Families, pet, and everyone come together for a fun, patriotic celebration and of course, to cool down with free Kona Ice.” During Halloween and Christmas, neighbors decorate their houses with colorful lights to compete for an H-E-B gift card.

Downtown San Antonio is 10 miles away

Interstate 410 runs along the Northwood's northern edge, leading to the city’s west side and major employers like Lackland Air Force Base. Downtown is a 10-mile drive south on U.S. 281. Northwood is within 5 miles of I-35, connecting to the 1604 Loop, which encircles the entire city. There’s also a cluster of VIA Transit bus stops on Nacogdoches Drive. The neighborhood is 3 miles east of San Antonio International Airport, which has flights to 45 destinations in the U.S., Mexico and Germany. Northeast Baptist Hospital is 3 miles north for 24/7 emergency care.
