Snow Heights residents describe their slice of Albuquerque as “A midcentury neighborhood for the modern family.” It’s a moniker that fits, says local Realtor Barbara Maddox. This area’s 1950s homes are a short drive from multiple shopping centers, numerous restaurants and Interstate 40, and residents are within walking distance of two parks. Still, homes are relatively affordable, selling for less than the city average. “It is centrally located, so when you live there you’re 10 minutes from everywhere except far off Rio Rancho,” says Maddox, a New Mexico native with Albuquerque-based Maddox & Co. Realtors. Maddox says this neighborhood was built for employees of Sandia National Laboratories. “It was like the modern little, all-American neighborhood,” Maddox says. Sandia, a company that applies technology to national security, was Albuquerque’s largest employer in the 1950s and is still a top employer.
