A blend of city and suburban living in Allentown
Southside Allentown is an active community just across the Little Lehigh Creek from all the excitement of downtown, known as Center City. Claudio Tiburcio, Realtor with Century 21, has served Allentown neighborhoods such as Southside since 2006. He says, “It’s busy, but not as busy as Center City. So, you have everything you need in one place while still close to downtown.” Locals enjoy the functionality of Southside with its many retailers and restaurants along the main roads, which branch out into residential subdivisions. The neighborhood features several parks, including the largest in the city, where residents can soak in the beauty of the Lehigh Valley and attend community events.
Residents love the pickleball courts at Devonshire Park.

Diverse housing options range from rowhouses to luxurious mansions
Areas closer to Center City are more urban, featuring early 1900s rowhouses and duplexes with front porches where neighbors can catch up. They typically have four to five bedrooms and range from $200,000 to $250,000. Southside gradually transitions into a suburb, where leafy subdivisions are lined with mid-1900s ranch-style and bi-level homes on quarter-acre lots ranging from $250,000 to $300,000. More modern housing developments can be found on the west side of town, where locals live in new traditional houses with Craftsman and Tudor architectural influences. Fixed on half- to one-acre yards, these single-family homes offer more living space than any other section of Southside. They can range anywhere from $600,000 for a 2,500-square-foot home with four bedrooms to $1.5 million for a 7,000-square-foot luxurious mansion.

A quick drive to retailers and local restaurants
Southside is loaded with shopping and dining options along Lehigh and South Fourth streets. Locals can choose from a wide range of stores, whether grabbing a quick snack from a corner market or shopping for discounted produce at Price Rite Marketplace. “It’s a pretty stable neighborhood,” says Tiburcio. “Not much has changed, and you have restaurants that have been here for decades.” Yocco’s, known as “The Hot Dog King,” is an Allentown staple and city chain serving the community since 1922. Locals can enjoy the neighborhood’s multi-cultural dining experience with tableside cooking at A1 Japanese Steak House and homey Dominican platters at La Parada Del Sabor. Meanwhile, those who like to hang out with friends over artisan grub and craft beer can hit up several brewpubs, like McCall Collective Brewing, and hang out past midnight playing shuffleboard and listening to live music at vibrant bars like Strange Brew Tavern, one of many open until 2 a.m.

Lehigh Parkway offers the beauty of Lehigh Valley
While Southside is home to several small parks, none are as prominent as Lehigh Parkway, the largest park in Allentown with 629 acres. Walkers, joggers and bike riders enjoy getting fresh air on the paved pathway that leads to historic covered bridges over the Little Lehigh Creek, a popular spot for fishing. Many of those fish come from Lil’ Le-Hi Trout Nursery, located in the park. Residents enjoy stopping by to feed the tens of thousands of fish, which are eventually released throughout the Lehigh Valley. Horse riding trails are available in the park’s dense woods, along with a challenging disc golf course.
