Alpine has always been densely forested, and it was not until the early 1800s that Alpine’s history begins. Summer homes were developed here around the time of the Civil War, and Alpine was home to cereal mills and logging operations until the construction of hotels and resorts in the Palisades in the 1870s accelerated this town’s growth. Alpine became a borough in 1903, deriving its name from its visual similarity to the world-famous Swiss Alps. This scenic beauty, and the town’s long history as a concentration of wealth and glamor, have made Alpine one of the state’s most desirable places to live.
Realtor Tyler Sellers of 2Win Realty says, “Alpine, New Jersey is a beautiful town, situated on the Hudson River across from Manhattan. It’s a community that really places a premium on privacy; there’s a lot of high net-worth people and celebrities who value privacy, and people move to Alpine because the town allows that.” Among Alpine’s most famous residents are Patrick Ewing, Eddie Murphy, Tracy Morgan, Lil’ Kim, Jay-Z, Britney Spears, and dozens more beloved celebrities. Alpine’s houses vary in size, style, and prices, most of which are in the lower millions range, reflecting the area’s desirability and the differing preferences of Alpine’s residents.
While Alpine may appear to be homogenous at first, this town is diverse in its character and activities. Sellers says, “You will find all the residences in the south, all of the green spaces in the north, and to the east is the Palisades Interstate Park, which is a fantastic park for biking, hiking, or getting some insane views with a little treat.” The State Line Lookout offers stunning views of the Hudson Valley, as well as a glimpse of New York’s nature miles downriver. Sellers also shares, “There are no restaurants in town with the exception of Kiku on 9W or the State Line Café at the State Line Lookout park of Alpine.” The State Line Café provides park visitors with lunches varying from chicken tenders to burgers, with the Hudson Valley as a scenic backdrop. Kiku adds teppanyaki and sushi to the town’s list of culinary offerings, as well as a unique dining experience involving the theatrical preparation of dishes by chefs right in front of the customer. From Japanese barbecue to seafood and vegetables, Kiku offers a wide selection of Japanese favorites and an unforgettable experience.
Sellers says of Alpine’s schools, “It’s got an excellent school system; the elementary school runs from K-to-6, and high schoolers attend Tenafly High School.” Tenafly High has been awarded the National Blue Ribbon School Award by the Department of Education in recognition of its academic excellence, and it has consistently ranked within the top 15 schools in the state since the 2010s.
Alpine also offers convenient commuting opportunities. Sellers shares, “You have the 9W, which is the main drag that runs from north to south right in the middle of town, and it takes you to the George Washington Bridge, which connects you to New York City.” With New York just a half-hour’s drive to the south, Alpine offers residents both easy trips into the city and back into the serene peace of this arcadian suburb.
