A small town defined by its historic charm
Neighbors congregate around dining tables in 100-year-old homes and share holiday feasts in the Borough of Ambridge. “It’s really easy to get to know your neighbors here,” says Steve Roberts, a local associate broker with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services. “We had a gathering of about eight people for Thanksgiving. None of them were related. But we put out an open call to neighbors, and they just stopped in,” Roberts says. He’s lived in Ambridge for 12 years. Ambridge is also known for its Old Economy Village, a famous historic district where 19th-century brick Federal-style buildings stand along cobblestone streets and actors in period garb perform the daily tasks of early Americans. The neighborhood’s up-and-coming shopping district also offers a historic feel, with shops and eateries housed in brick rowhouses along sidewalk-lined streets.

Former mill worker homes offer well-built, historic homes
Most homes were built in the early- to mid-1900s. They often sit snuggly on small lots and feature between three and six bedrooms. “There’s a lot of good solid housing that were once mill worker homes,” Roberts says. Like many towns in the greater Pittsburgh area, Ambridge was once a thriving steel mill town. When it comes to architecture, American foursquare and Dutch Colonial Revival homes dominate this area, though a few Colonial Revival, bungalow, and cottage-style homes also dot the streets. Fixer uppers and smaller dwellings can sell for between $60,000 and $100,000, while larger, partly renovated homes can sell for between $100,000 and $150,000. Fully updated homes can start around $150,000 and surpass $260,000.
