Foxcroft Heights' midcentury housing is more affordable than in other Arlington neighborhoods. The community stretches for half a mile, near Arlington National Cemetery, the Sheraton Pentagon City Hotel, Fort Myer military base and the Air Force Memorial. Housing mainly consists of Cape Cods, small cottages, duplexes and townhouses. During the Civil War, Foxcroft Heights was a community for African Americans who had escaped slavery, known as "Freedman's Village." One of its residents was Sojourner Truth, the renowned abolitionist and activist. Foxcroft Heights Park today dedicates a historical plaque and bridge to the legacy of Freedman's Village. The park, which is the neighborhood's only green space, also has a playground and picnic tables. Towers Park is about a mile away and has a larger playground, sports facilities and a dog park. Nearby Arlington National Cemetery is the nation's largest military cemetery, serving as the final resting place for over 400,000 servicemembers across over 600 acres of land. There's one Ethiopian restaurant in the neighborhood, and shopping centers in National Landing, Pentagon City and Crystal City are a short drive away. Students attend top-rated schools, including Hoffman-Boston Elementary, Thomas Jefferson Middle and Washington-Liberty High. Residents have easy access to Columbia Pike, Washington Boulevard and Interstate 395.
