Named on the National Register of Historic Places, Collier Heights was founded in 1948 as Atlanta’s first neighborhood designed by and for the city’s growing Black middle class. It has been home to history makers like Martin Luther King Sr., Donald Hollowell and Christine King Farris. Many original residents still live in the neighborhood, keeping the area’s history alive. Today, Collier Heights is an accessibly priced community that continues to attract a diverse population looking for a prime location near downtown. “The big draw is its proximity to the city,” says Jackye Mumphrey, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty Cityside specializing in the West Side. “Everyone was geared to the suburbs for a while, but businesses are starting to return downtown, and Collier Heights is nearby.”

Collier Heights’ original '50s and '60s-era homes
Most of the split-level, single-story and bungalow-style homes in Collier Heights have been in the neighborhood since the 1950s and 1960s. Some residences have been remodeled but still retain their original brickwork and wrought iron features. Large front yards surrounded by thick trees and hilly roads connect Collier Heights’ subdivisions. Homes that need repairs typically sell for $150,000 to $300,000, while professionally renovated properties are priced from $250,000 to $400,000. “There is a little bit more affordability in the neighborhood, compared to some places in the city where you have to offer more than listing price,” says Jan McGill, an associate broker with Origins Real Estate of Georgia who has lived in Atlanta for over 20 years. “People look in this area for investment opportunities as well.” Collier Heights’ overall CAP Index Crime Score is 5 out of 10, slightly above the national average score of 4.

A few local businesses are along Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway, including small soul food and chicken restaurants like Ameen Fish and Wings and A1 Soulfood. Collier Heights is zoned for Atlanta Public Schools, which scores an overall B on Niche. Students may attend C-rated Usher-Collier Elementary School, offering an extended STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) curriculum. John Lewis Invictus Academy, which covers sixth through eighth grades, and Frederick Douglass High School, are both C-minus rated and also offer STEAM-focused classes, and career and technical classes in business, marketing and entrepreneurship. The Georgia Institute of Technology is in downtown Atlanta, as well as smaller schools like Clark Atlanta University, Georgia State University and Morris Brown College.

The entire neighborhood is surrounded by green space shaped by Sandy Creek. A.D. Williams Park on James Jackson Parkway and Dr. Mary Shy Scott Memorial Park on Collier Drive cap off both ends of the creek, and both have playgrounds, softball fields and basketball courts. Houses of worship like St. Paul of the Cross Church and Jackson Memorial Baptist Church on Fairburn Road also surround the creek. Atlanta’s largest park, Westside Reservoir Park, is shaped by the connecting Proctor Creek. The park has walking and biking trails overlooking the Atlanta skyline and the former Bellwood Quarry.

Commuters can take MARTA’s Blue Line downtown
Collier Heights is near the intersection of Interstate 285, which runs north to south, and I-20 and Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway, which both run east to west. Downtown Atlanta and all its attractions, including the Georgia Aquarium and the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, are only an 8-mile drive away. Residents can also take the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) bus and train lines into the city from the Hamilton E. Holmes Station, which is about 2 miles from the neighborhood. Southwest Atlanta Hospital is the nearest medical facility at 4 miles away and has bus stops on site. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is 14 miles away.
