Between the open plains of northern Colorado and Aurora's parks and shopping centers, Sterling Hills is a 21st-century suburb with a quiet atmosphere. The neighborhood lies just two miles from one of Aurora’s largest employment hubs and is bordered by hundreds of acres of protected open space.
Sterling Hills has a mix of modern traditional, craftsman style ranch-style and multi-family homes, with single-family options featuring fenced-in back lots and multi-car garages. Most houses were built in the early 2000s, with some built as recently as 2016. “It’s a newer side of town in a high growth area,” says Dossie Haiskey, a local Realtor with Realty One Group Premier. “You have a small HOA that keeps home values up as Aurora continues to grow east.” Well-landscaped front yards are dotted with mature trees and greenery, making an established, lived in feel. Stand-alone homes start in the low $400,000s and reach the mid $600,000s, while condos and townhouses range from the upper $100,000s to the mid $400,000s. Neighborhood families are served by the Adams-Arapahoe 28J School District, locally known as Aurora Public Schools. High school students can take a wide variety of career and technical education courses or earn concurrent enrollment through classes with the Community College of Aurora. The school district has an open enrollment program, where families can apply for their school of choice if they wish to enroll outside of their designated school.
The Buckley Space Force Base sits around 2 miles north of the community and has over 15,000 employees in the technology and defense industry. The Denver Tech Center, another large employment hub, is roughly 10 miles southwest, while downtown Denver is 20 miles west. The E-470 toll road is less than a mile away and provides less-trafficked routes to Denver International Airport and other Denver-area suburbs. Bus stops can be found along Tower Road and Iliff Avenue, with route 133 connecting residents to the Town Center at Aurora and the Nine Mile Light Rail Station.
Restaurants and groceries can be found just two miles away at the Buckley Square, East Iliff Plaza and Iliff Crossings shopping centers. The area has a grocery store, a hardware store and popular chain restaurants. There are also a variety of locally-owned businesses here, including:
Paved walking trails throughout the neighborhood lead northeast to Great Plains Park, which has athletic facilities, a playground, a splash pad and picnic tables. Sterling Hills Park and Sterling Hills West Park each have a playground and open field space. Residents can also take a yoga class or swim indoors at the Central Recreation Center, less than a mile east of the neighborhood on South Telluride Street. The Plains Conservation Center stretches across 1,100 acres just west of the community and has miles of rolling trails, a visitor center and a historic homestead. A wide array of wildlife can be spotted from the trails, including bald eagles, red-tailed hawks, coyotes and prairie dogs.
