Just super friendly people."

Barton Spring Road runs through the community, leading commuters to the South MoPac Expressway. The CapMetro 30 bus serves the area, making public transportation highly accessible.

Sleek, highly modern homes are popping up all over the neighborhood, with the style of the building echoing the cubism movement, all levels of square shapes with glass walls and windows letting in plenty of natural light. Apart from these contemporary new constructions, a few midcentury Craftsman-style homes remain, a classic juxtaposition to the modern domiciles. "Each home is unique, it's definitely not a cookie-cutter neighborhood," says Quay. "It's a pretty big mix of housing styles. There are new developments popping up, but you'll still see homes from the 1930s to 1940s." Luxury condominium units are also common, a slightly more affordable option than the million-dollar modern homes. Prices in the area range from $250,000 for a condo unit to $4.5 million for a newly constructed modern estate.

Children in the area attend Zilker Elementary School, which has an overall Niche grade of A-minus. Next, they attend O. Henry Middle School, which also has an A-minus overall Niche grade. "Zilker Park is Austin's biggest park. With Austin City Limits taking place there, there are tons of musicians that come from all over the place," says Quay. "There's also the Austin Kite Festival, where you'll have thousands of people out there flying kites. Though when there aren't events you'll see people playing soccer, suntanning and just enjoying the day." The park also offers boat rentals for locals who want to take a kayak, canoe or paddleboat onto the Colorado River. Zilker Park is just one stop along the Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail, which meanders along the river down to Lady Bird Lake. Those with canine companions can take them to the off-leash dog area to allow them to run and play. However, one of the best features of the park is the Zilker Botanical Garden. Visitors can explore the Taniguchi Japanese Garden, the Hartman Prehistoric Garden and the fragrant Rose Garden. Concerts, festivals and other fun community events frequently occur at the park, giving residents plenty to do. Another nearby park packed with amenities is Butler Metro Park. Visitors can perch on the observation hill overlooking Lady Bird Lake and the Austin skyline while children play in the Alliance Children’s Garden or cool off at the Liz Carpenter Splash Pad. The children’s garden isn’t an average playscape—it features a bell piano, lawn chess, table tennis and play equipment. Next to the park is Auditorium Shores, which hosts outdoor concerts and festivals, and the Long Center for the Performing Arts, where patrons can catch performances from the Austin Symphony Orchestra, the Austin Opera and Ballet Austin.

The arts are alive and well in Zilker. Zilker Park is home to the famous Austin City Limits Music Festival, which draws music fans from across the country. There’s also Opa, a Greek coffee and wine bar offering an assortment of espresso drinks and a menu of Greek food. For something a little stronger, locals can head to Zilker Brewing Company and Taproom, an industrial brewery located in an old mechanic’s garage. I love living in Barton Hill neighborhood, as it's close to the city, but outside of the urban zone, so it still feels a bit like the burbs. The parks in this neighborhood are amazing, and the people are nice. I have moved away from this neighborhood, only to move back after about a year being gone. I haven't traveled much in the US, but this place is great compared neighborhoods in Houston, and San Antonio.
