History from the Ice Age and the 1800s
Avon is 10 miles west of Hartford and stands on its own as a town within the Farmington Valley. With local shops, national retailers and a history dating to the end of the most recent glacial period, Avon has continued to evolve. “People who may want to buy a house in the area should know how deep in history we are,” says Terri Wilson, who has been the president of The Avon Historical Society for 17 years. In 2019, a 12,500-year-old Paleoindian site was found in the area while government agencies were excavating in order to build a new bridge. This archaeological find gives evidence that humans worked in the New England area during the Ice Age, although further research is still planned. “We’re no longer really rural, but more suburban,” says Wilson. “We’re a typical growing town.” Avon has become a mixture of the old and the new, with homes built in the 1800s and estates built in 2010. “We’re close to Hartford and several major hospitals and research facilities,” Wilson says.
Many Avon residents follow Route 44 to cross over Avon Mountain to work in Hartford.

Range with pricing and age in a forested landscape
With the age and sprawl of Avon, Colonial’s dot the landscape alongside more modern homes built from the 1900s to today. Colonials sell between $250,000 and $350,000. Cape Cods, ranch, bi-levels and split-levels also fill the town, although there are some custom-builds in the more rural areas of town. Homes begin around $190,000 for a ranch home on less than acre with two bedrooms and can reach $4 million for a Colonial Revival on 2.6 acres with six bedrooms and eight bathrooms overlooking the Farmington Valley. The soil in Connecticut is fairly sandy, so gardeners may have to build raised beds for gardens. Homeowners associations aren’t fairly common, but there can be a monthly fee between $30 and $40. As the roads weave through the town, occasionally dipping and rising with the terrain, it is equally likely that homes will be hidden behind thick foliage or winding driveways as that they may sit in orderly fashion next to each and closer to the street. Some houses will also have solar panels, but they tend to be either the homes with lots of land and space to clear trees or homes that are closer together with less foliage.

A ranked schools at all levels, including the private school
Avon has two elementary schools for kindergarten through fourth grade, Roaring Brook and Pine Grove Elementary. Students then move to Thompson Brook Intermediate for fifth and sixth grade before continuing at Avon Middle for seventh and eighth grade. All four schools receive an A from Niche. At Avon High School, which earns an A-plus from Niche, students can take Advanced Placement courses and earn college credits through the University of Connecticut. The Avon Old Farms School is a private all-boys boarding school which first opened in 1927 and earns an A-plus from Niche.
Avon High is ranked #16 among Connecticut public high schools.

State routes in the north of town and few buses
While Avon has several buses that service the area, most of the neighborhood is more suitable for cars. U.S. Route 44, which crosses through the northern part of the town in front of town hall, crosses all of Connecticut east to west. U.S. Route 202, beginning in Maine to the north and ending in Delaware to the south, hits Route 44 and follows it west for a while before continuing south.
Most retail is concentrated On Route 44 in Avon.
Limited bus service is available to connect Avon with other towns along Route 44.

Coffee shops line East Main Road
On East Main Street, residents can do shopping or have a bite to eat. Whole Foods Market and The Whale Tea, a bubble tea restaurant, sit across from each other, while further east on the road, coffee shops line the road, from Dom’s Coffee and Take Tea, A British Style Tea Room, to BeanZ and Co and The Coffee Trade where residents can buy coffee supplies. Close to the Avon Free Public Library, at the intersection of West Avon and Country Club Road, residents can get donuts from Luke’s Donut Shop or pizza from the Pizzeria Da Vinci Avon.

Hiking, paddling and an accessible playground
Residents can lace up hiking boots and apply bug spray to hike through Found Lake Park, a 124-acre park that also allows cross-country skiing in the winter. At the Fisher Meadows Recreation Area, residents can paddle across the lake, do a pick-up game of basketball or use one of the eight all-purpose fields for soccer, football or ultimate frisbee. Buckingham Road Recreation Area’s accessible playground and fields can have children running through and exploring the different equipment.
Paddlers and fishermen can take advantage of the Farmington River or local ponds.
Farmington Canal Heritage Trail is an 82 mile rail trail that runs through Avon.

Honoring veterans and local recreation area with summer pool
“We’re proud of our veterans,” says Wilson. “We have two parades in the area.” The 79th annual Memorial Day Parade starts at 11 a.m., with a small ceremony after the parade at the Avon Town Green. The Sycamore Hills Recreation Area’s pool opens the second Saturday in June and remains open until Labor Day. Residents can practice at the outdoor tennis courts or shoot hoops on the basketball court.
Important to Know
The Farmington River runs through the eastern section of the town, so during wetter seasons there may be risks of flooding.
