The valley between forests
Bakersfield is situated in the valley between the Sequoia and Los Padres National Forests. As one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, Oleander-Sunset offers a lifestyle immersed in glimpses of the valley’s early residents. Homes are uniquely styled; schools are a century old and nearby businesses have been serving the community for even longer. New haunts and annual events celebrate Bakersfield’s diversity, while nearby parks host local musicians and county fairs. “It’s really a unique neighborhood,” says Alex Daredia, a local Real Estate Sales Professional for Century 21. “It’s kind of a diamond in the rough, and there’s a lot of old money. There are even senators that live out there.”
Historic home styles line gridded residential streets
California bungalows and ranch-style homes cluster along the gridded, residential streets of Oleander-Sunset. Homes built as early as the 1910s sit beside midcentury properties of varying architectural styles. Some flaunt Colonial-style columns, while others lean into Spanish Revival archways or decorative trim in the style of Queen Anne. Regardless, homes are priced between $200,000 and $400,000. The accessible cost of living is partially owed to property sizes, which rarely surpass 1,500 square feet. This means residents are lucky to have driveways or attached garages, most opting for street parking out of necessity. With sidewalks outlining communities, however, residents can wave from their front porches as friends and neighbors walk their children to nearby schools.
Tequila and taffy in Oleander-Sunset
Thoroughfares surrounding Oleander-Sunset are dotted with Mexican restaurants of varying specialties. Mariscos Las Cazuelitas is a seafood haunt, while Agave Grill & Tequila has a full bar with eclectic margarita flights. Dewar’s Candy Shop, however, offers a glimpse into Bakerfield’s history. Since 1930, the shop has evoked childhood nostalgia for lifelong residents with its black and white tiled floor and bright pink booths. From candies to sundaes to stretched taffy, Dewar’s has been a go-to spot for decades. Farther west, Moo Creamery serves grass-fed burgers and ice cream from scratch with ingredients sourced from local ranches, farms and outposts. Folks grab daily provisions from shopping centers off nearby highways. Target, Home Depot, Aldi and Vons are within a mile of the neighborhood.
City-wide events celebrating brews and eats
Bakersfield is bursting with unique and delicious eats, a well-known fact reflected in its annual, city-wide events. The Bakersfield Country & Craft Beer Festival features upwards of 20 craft breweries serving samples out of souvenir-tasting cups. Live country music and local restaurant vendors enhance the experience, all supporting raising funds for local charities. From Maple Doughnut Pulled Pork to spiked Dole Whip, the Kern County Fair’s food vendors go above and beyond to elevate the carnival experience. Thrilling rides and animal shows are popular at the fair, too, held each year at summer’s end. Meanwhile, the Latino Food Festival hosts a Menudo Cook Off, celebrating local Latino culture.
Century-old schools in the Bakersfield City District
Local students are zoned for the Bakersfield City School District, beginning at Roosevelt Elementary. The school receives a C-plus on Niche, a walkable institution serving the community since 1922. Emerson Middle School receives a C-minus on Niche, while Bakersfield High has a B-plus. The latter is the county’s oldest high school, originally opening in the late 19th century. Students are taught in a hybrid setting, utilizing Canvas to complete coursework. A gifted and talented program accompanies several extracurriculars and a broad range of athletics to produce well-rounded graduates.
Summer concerts at nearby parks
Constructed in 1908, Beale Park is Bakersfield’s oldest. The Greek-style amphitheater hosts performances by the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra, a massive draw to the Concert in the Park series held each summer. Residents can enjoy a playground, tennis courts and a splash pad during the off-season. Nearby, Lowell Park’s playground occupies a sandy lot surrounded by open field space and towering, old-growth trees. Both parks are walkable for many residents, ideal for weekend or after-school strolls. A bit farther north, locals congregate along the Kern River at Beach and Yokuts Park for annual events and scenic views. Some residents even venture to Kern City for the Sundale and Stockdale Country Clubs.
Navigating the valley
Chester Avenue serves as a central thoroughfare in the Oleander-Sunset community, taking locals less than a mile north into the heart of Bakersfield. The area is quite walkable. But many rely on personal vehicles or the Golden Empire Transit System, which provides stops along Chester Avenue, Brundage Lane and several other streets. Dignity Health Mercy Hospital is the closest emergency room, situated just north of the neighborhood. However, folks can head a few blocks north to reach Adventist Health Bakersfield. State Route 99 borders residences to the west, reaching north toward Fresno and passing Meadows Field Airport 10 miles into the commute. In the south, the route merges with Interstate 5 on the way to Santa Clarita, an 86-mile trip.
