Baltimore Highlands is north of Highlandtown and west of Patterson Park. It's a densely populated mix of residential and commercial spaces. Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center is nearby, offering various medical services, including a level II trauma center and a pediatric center. "It's a great neighborhood," says Marty Saunders, a 30-year veteran Realtor with Advance Realty, who sells homes in Baltimore Highlands and throughout Baltimore. "It's relatively close to a lot of things. Investors like that neighborhood. People are buying houses that need a little bit of love and selling them for more than they paid." The neighborhood is convenient for medical students and doctors who prefer being close to their jobs. And, Saunders says, things are on the uptick here after a period of challenges. "It's becoming a solid, blue-collar neighborhood," Saunders says.

Baltimore Highlands features city streets with blocks of modest rowhouses interspersed with corner stores, bars, and restaurants. Homes in this neighborhood are traditional two-storied rowhouses featuring red brick or stone facades, short stoops and narrow back patio areas. However, prices range from $120,000 to around $210,000 depending upon the block, the house and the renovations previous or existing homeowners have made.

Pulaski and I-895 prone to traffic
With Pulaski Highway and Interstate 895 coming from the north and east, access to other points in Baltimore is easy. However, traffic can be a challenge in the densely populated neighborhood. "Traffic is heavy," Saunders says. "It's heavy. Most of the time, it's bumper-to-bumper." Fortunately, travelers and commuters have non-driving options with buses running through the neighborhood along East Lombard St. and South Highland Ave.
