Canton is a lively urban village settled between the Patapsco River and the sprawling Patterson Park to the north. Patterson Park, located north of Canton, offers two playgrounds, basketball and tennis courts, ballfields, a swimming pool and a lake, which is popular for catch-and-release fishing.
Canton Waterfront Park is a favorite spot to catch fireworks, festivals and airshows. During the summer, the park hosts local radio station WTMD’s First Thursday Festivals concert series. Featuring artists from around the nation, this series draws approximately 10,000 attendees weekly for free music and good vibes. The Canton Community Association also keeps residents informed about what’s going on in the neighborhood, including local events, informational meetings and volunteer opportunities.
Canton is a medium-density neighborhood, where narrow city streets are lined with brick rowhouses and occasional modern condo complexes. “The homes are smaller and newer constructions, and range in pricing, which can suit budgets for different walks of life,” says Towles. Rowhouses are typically priced from the low $200,000s to the low $900,000s, depending on the square footage and age of the home. Condo units often cost anywhere from the low $200,000s to the upper $500,000s.
Baltimore City Public Schools covers the Canton area. There are school choice options available for middle and high school students, with open enrollment throughout the district, magnet programs with specialized curricula, and opportunities for out-of-zone transfers.
Canton’s proximity to major public transit corridors makes it a convenient landing spot.
