A few carryout restaurants on West North Avenue and access to Mondawmin Mall make for several retail options. Local parks and recreation centers offer outdoor and indoor activity spaces throughout the year. Just 4 miles north of the Inner Harbor, Coppin Heights is set apart from the bustle of the city but still has access to all that Baltimore has to offer.

Neat lines of Baltimore row houses
Coppin Heights is lined with rows of the federal-style brick row houses that Baltimore is known for. Though most of the area is made up of concrete roads and sidewalks, some porches overlook tree-lined streets, and a few residents live near open or closed storefronts and nearby parks. Newly renovated row houses sit next to abandoned dwellings with opportunities for investment or renovation. For first-time homebuyers or those who need a little extra help, Baltimore’s Vacants to Value Booster program helps buyers get homes without large down payments. “There’s a lot of revitalization going on for investors and homeowners alike,” says William Savage, a Realtor with Keller Williams who grew up not too far from Coppin Heights. “Their Vacants to Value program gives about $10,000 in grants to first-time homebuyers that purchase a vacant home and turn it around into living quarters,” Savage says. “It’s nice because they can design the whole house to their liking.” Auction prices for homes that need major renovations or were totally abandoned range between $30,000 and $80,000. For fully renovated or move-in-ready houses, listings range from $130,000 to $250,000.

Local takeaway and the Mondawmin Mall
For a taste of local lake trout and fried comfort food, Pak Man Fried Chicken is only three blocks east of Coppin State University. Across the street, quick trips can be made at Uptown Liquors or Jr’s Mini Mart. Carey Hardware is a popular local hardware store that makes it easy to get tools in town. Mondawmin Mall is just north of the neighborhood and has two floors and over 100 retailers. The property also contains familiar chain businesses such as Planet Fitness and a Shoppers grocery store. “Mondawmin Mall is a major transit hub for the area. It’s probably, in my opinion, the center point of the city where you can get on any of the systems and go northwest, south, or east in Baltimore,” Savage says.

Coppin State University summer concert series
Coppin Heights also houses a portion of Coppin State University’s campus, including its Science and Technology Center. The university’s annual summer concert series has been a popular local tradition for over a decade. Visitors can pull up a camp chair to listen to a variety of bands at the university’s South Quad. Tickets are free, and registration can be done online through the Coppin University website.
Baltimore City Public School programs
Depending on their address, Coppin Heights students may first attend Matthew A. Henson Elementary for kindergarten through fifth grade. Students would then go through the Baltimore City Public School lottery system for sixth through eighth grade. Rosemont Elementary Middle School teaches kindergarten through eighth grade for students living nearby. Both schools are graded a C-minus on Niche. At the high school level, Baltimore allows students to choose their high school. The closest high schools include Coppin Academy, which is graded a C-minus, and Frederick Douglass High School, which is rated a C and is known for its Army Junior ROTC program.

Easterwood Park and the Maryland Zoo
Easterwood Park is in the southeast portion of Coppin Heights. The park has plenty of green space alongside both a basketball court and a playground. The Easterwood Recreation Center connects the community and supports neighborhood children by providing after-school amenities. This can include evening nutrition, fitness classes and mentoring opportunities. Wilbur H. Waters Park is a small park nearby with benches, a playground, and a basketball court. For warm sunny days, the Maryland Zoo is less than 2 miles north at Druid Hill Park. For a day inside, the Enoch Pratt Free Library branch on Pennsylvania Avenue has gone through major renovations and supports the community through free resources and events.

Navigating the Baltimore area
With multiple bus stops along West North Ave and North Bentalou St, residents can reach Downtown, Johns Hopkins University, Leakin Park and M&T Stadium – all within a 4-mile radius. Prefer to travel by train? The Mondawmin Metro Station is on the northeast side of the mall’s parking lot. “It's a subway station, but all the buses in the city merge there, too. If you get on the subway, you can head over to the Owings Mills shopping district or go downtown to the Fells Point area, which is a hotspot,” Savage says. “Or you can get on one of the buses and travel to the east side of town, which is the Johns Hopkins Hospital and University.” For long-distance travel, the Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is about 12 miles south of the neighborhood.
