The Park Heights Renaissance and other community programs
Cylburn is fueled by its active residents, who meet monthly to discuss concerns and make plans for revitalization. The nonprofit Park Heights Renaissance also serves several Baltimore-area communities, one of which is Cylburn. This organization works to address a variety of needs, including outreach to Pimlico Elementary School families and teachers to connect both with resources. In addition, the nonprofit negotiated with the city to put 10% of the profits from the Pimlico Race Course back into programs for the Park Heights area. Each year, PHR also hosts the George “Spider” Anderson Music and Arts Festival, which brings people together in celebration of the first African American racer to win the Preakness Stakes. There are live performances, food trucks and, of course, pony rides. The CAP Index crime score for Cylburn is 5 out of 10, which is slightly higher than the national average of 4. The score for violent crime is an 8 out of 10.
Trails and gardens at the Cylburn Arboretum
The area’s largest recreation space is the 200-acre Cylburn Arboretum, a year-round public garden with walking paths that pass tall sweet gum trees, as well as ferns and cacti. The arboretum offers nature camps for local youth, and they host lectures and a Halloween-themed evening nature walk in October. In the summer, residents can take swim lessons and water aerobics classes at the Callowhill Aquatic Center, which is beside Pimlico Elementary. The James D. Gross Recreation Center organizes activities for seniors, and Catherine’s Family and Youth Services has after-school programs for elementary and middle school kids. Another major selling point, Hall says, is the historic Pimlico Race Course, which is being rebuilt to add a community event space. When it is completed, the racetrack will not only host the annual Preakness Stakes horse race, but it will also serve as a festival venue. With Druid Hill Park and Loyola University’s Ridley Athletic Complex within a 3-mile drive, there are many more recreation opportunities nearby.

Brick duplexes and mid-1900s single-family homes
In Cylburn, Hall says, there is a higher percentage of homeowners, many of whom have lived in the community for years. As the neighborhood falls within the footprint of the Park Heights Renaissance nonprofit, there are some grants and incentives available for new buyers and existing owners who need assistance. Single-family homes include some early 1900s bungalows and American Foursquares, as well as a good number of Cape Cods. They often have grassy front lawns, private side driveways and tree-shaded backyards. Those in need of repairs might sell between $150,000 and $200,000, but the number of available project homes is decreasing as developers buy them up. Renovated residences generally list from $300,000 to just over $400,000. Buyers can also opt for mid-1900s brick row houses and semi-detached homes. Row houses without recent updates may sell from $100,000 to $130,000, and semi-detached residences range from $140,000 to $270,000, depending on their condition. In the southeastern corner of Cylburn, some properties lie within flood-risk areas. Lenders may require the purchase of flood insurance for homes in flood zones.

Priority admission to Pimlico Elementary/Middle School
Students here attend Baltimore City Public Schools, such as Pimlico Elementary/Middle School, located right in Cylburn. Pimlico is a public charter school that rates a C-minus on Niche. Children in Cylburn receive priority acceptance to Pimlico because they are within the school zone. Students may then choose which high school to attend. One choice is Forest Park High School, which also earns a C-minus. Another option that they may apply to is the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, an A-rated, Blue Ribbon Award-winning high school. Poly, as it’s commonly called, offers advanced courses geared toward careers in engineering and math. Parents looking for alternative options can find the Waldorf School of Baltimore located about 1 mile east. This school promotes the integration of art, music, nature and movement into all academic subjects, and it has not yet been rated by Niche.
Pimlico Elementary/Middles School serves Cylburn students form Pre-K through the 8th grade.

Retail and dining are a short drive away
Shopping and dining options are a short drive or bus ride from Cylburn. On Park Heights Avenue, just west of Pimlico, there is an assortment of casual eateries and take-out spots, as well as gas stations, pharmacies and mini markets. The Island Food Market carries oxtail, produce and Caribbean ingredients, and Dash Seafood offers fried fish and sandwiches. Along Reisterstown Road, about 3 miles away, there are big-box retailers and a Giant Food supermarket. For more upscale shopping and dining, Hall says that people visit The Village of Cross Keys mall, around 2 miles east, where they can get brunch at Easy Like Sunday. On Wednesdays, shoppers can pick up locally grown produce and baked goods from the farmers market in Druid Hill Park, less than 3 miles away.

Travel via nearby Interstate 83
Though there are nearby public transportation options, Cylburn is relatively car dependent. Commuters who need to travel downtown can take Interstate 83, which passes about 1 mile east. Residents who live near Greenspring Avenue can walk to several Maryland Transit Administration buses. There’s also a light rail station less than 2 miles east and a metro station a similar distance west. With Sinai Hospital a few blocks from most homes, a Level II Trauma Center, specialists and primary care physicians are within close reach.
