Residential pocket in southwestern Baltimore
Situated just south of Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park, Edmondson Village offers a residential pocket in southwest Baltimore with quiet streets in the north and a high-traffic thoroughfare in the south. Most homebuyers interested in the neighborhood are local to the Baltimore area, though there are a few exceptions. “You have to know Baltimore to really want to buy in Baltimore,” explains Alison Debraux of Taylor Properties, an agent with almost a decade of experience in the city and its outlying counties.
Brick rowhouses dating back to 1920s off Edmondson Ave
Though apartments border the park in the northernmost part of the neighborhood, most of the community consists of brick rowhouses with decorative awnings and concrete front porches. Located within Baltimore City limits, Edmondson Village maintains an urban feel with bus stops along Edmondson Avenue and a narrow sidewalk bordering every residential street. Many properties feature chain-link fences in the front yard for added security, and homes have a compact backyard that can be used for parking—although most residents opt to take advantage of the plentiful street parking in the area. On average, homes were constructed around the 1920s and 1930s, though some were built as late as the 1950s. Homes that need rehabilitation start at around $65,000, and turnkey houses with three or four bedrooms begin closer to $100,000 and can extend to $280,000 if recently renovated.

Part of Baltimore City Public Schools, the neighborhood gains access to walkable school options, beginning with Wildwood Elementary/Middle—formerly known as Lyndhurst, which is a D-plus-graded school, according to Niche. From here, students choose where to attend high school, but Edmondson-Westside High is the nearest option. Edmondson-Westside earns a C-minus grade and includes Career and Technology Education options for biosciences, engineering and transportation technologies.

Scenic backdrop of Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park
Bordered by Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park, the neighborhood benefits from access to one of the largest woodland parks in the country. A carefully preserved green space with over 1,000 acres of land, the park invites residents to take in scenic views along one of the many hiking trails and learn about the native plant life in the area at the Carrie Murray Nature Center. For access to a playground a few blocks from the front door, locals can venture to Lyndhurst Park, one of the many parks attached to Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park.
Access to historical Edmondson Village Shopping Center
The Edmondson Village Shopping Center is less than a mile west and has remained a staple in the community since the late 1940s. Though the center already includes stores like Giant, Family Dollar and Red Tags Thrift Shop, additional retailers will join as it undergoes renovation in the coming years. The shopping center also includes national chains like Popeye’s and Rita’s and local dining establishments like Kimmy’s, a well-loved soul food restaurant.

CityLink stops for heading to downtown
With bus lines and major thoroughfares bordering the neighborhood, commuters can quickly get to work via public transit or car. Served by CityLink Blue, the neighborhood benefits from easy trips to downtown and to shopping hubs like Mondawmin Mall. For those driving into the heart of the city, Edmondson Avenue links to Charles Street in less than 4 miles and The Johns Hopkins Hospital in 5 miles. When venturing outside Maryland, the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is about 10 miles south.
Growth and change on the horizon
Like many of Baltimore’s neighborhoods, history and change are essential in Edmondson Village’s present and future. “On the whole, when you come from outside, you have to have a strong constitution to live in Baltimore,” Debraux says. The namesake shopping center is just one example of changes coming to the community that might be unknown to those living outside the city limits. Though Edmondson Village once wowed Baltimoreans, recent events have left the neighborhood hoping for restoration to its former glory. As a result, renovations are coming that aim to improve property value and ease residents' minds.
