Fells Point, in Baltimore, is known for its historic cobblestone streets and vibrant waterfront.
Once an unruly port of pirates, the historic neighborhood of Fells Point has transformed from a rowdy shipyard into one of Baltimore's coolest places to live. Established in 1763, Fells Point is notable for the pivotal role its shipbuilders, citizens and privateers played in thwarting the British during the War of 1812. Today, this neighborhood is a charming mix of historic, residential, and commercial properties.
Coffee and cobblestones
A good day in Fells Point should include a walk along Thames Street, Harbor Point Promenade or the Broadway Pier. The iconic Domino Sugars sign looms over the Patapsco River, a stylish pean to the industrial roots of Baltimore. Local businesses pepper the area, ranging from the award-winning music store Sound Garden to The Daily Grind café to Angel Park Boutique, where on any given Saturday, locals shop to the beats of an in-house DJ. Toni James and her husband Justin have been running Angel Boutique and next-door Katwalk Boutique since 1997. "The locals go hard for small businesses in Fells Point,” she says. “There's a new Chanel Store down the street, but the customers still support us."

If it was good enough for Poe...
Fells Point is home to four of Eater Magazine's 38 Essential Baltimore Restaurants, including the Thames Street Oyster House and Cindy Lou's Fish House. Historic Broadway Market offers cuisines at ten diverse vendor stalls and the Cannon Room at the Sagamore Pendry Hotel stocks a global whiskey selection. Opened in 1775, the dimly lit Horse You Came In On Saloon is the oldest operating saloon in the nation and is rumored to have been Edgar Allen Poe's last stop before his mysterious death. A new Whole Foods shows how trendy this neighborhood has become, but the Fell Point Farmers Market remains a local favorite.

A basketball powerhouse
The school rankings website Niche gives the district Baltimore City Public Schools an overall C-minus. Fells Point's City Springs Elementary School and The Crossroads Middle School received C-minuses. The nearest high school, Paul Laurence Dunbar, received a C overall but is nationally known for its athletics. With a team mascot in keeping with Baltimore's former nickname, City That Reads, the Poets have won 10 state football championships since 1994. But the Poets men's basketball team made Dunbar famous, having won the state title 15 times and the national championship three times.

To drive or to scoot?
Fells Point is one of a handful of Baltimore neighborhoods within walking distance of two stations on Baltimore's Metro Subwaylink, one of which is in Johns Hopkins Hospital half a mile north. The Subwaylink travels through the Inner Harbor and downtown before terminating in the northern suburb of Owens Mills. Driving may be preferable, in which case Broadway Avenue leads north to cross most major city thruways and Interstate 83 runs along the western border of Fells Point. Or scooters, as James points out. "People love scooters around here."
