Lakeland’s history shaped its lakes and housing today
The community of Lakeland in Southwest Baltimore was once known by a different name. Dubbed “Minersville” in the early 1800s due to the area’s many iron ore pits, the first homes here housed miners, or employees of the Baltimore Iron Works company. Later, as the need for this industry faded, the abandoned ore pits filled with water forming small lakes, and the community’s name became Lakeland. Today, Lakeland is a diverse mixed-use community featuring manufacturing and warehouse spaces as well as a residential population complete with cozy housing options.
Row houses and single-family homes in bright, bold colors
Housing options in Lakeland consist primarily of traditional Baltimore row houses, as well as a mix of Arts and Craftsman influenced detached single-family homes. Prospective buyers can choose from minimalist cottages and ranch-styles or opt for the larger American Four-Square or Dutch Colonial designs. This community also offers some duplex, or semi-detached options. Many of the single-family homes in Lakeland are painted in bright shades of blue, orange, green and pink, and feature unique details like expansive roofed front porches. The most popular form of row houses here are two-storied red brick homes featuring flat facades and short front stoops. The average sales price here is $135,000, price points vary depending on the age, size and condition of the property.
Local schools offer STEM pathways and job placement support
Students here attend Baltimore City Public Schools like Lakeland Elementary/Middle School, and the Paul Laurence Dunbar High School. At Dunbar, students receive first-in-line status for job placement, via partnerships with local organizations like Johns Hopkins University, the University of Maryland, and Kaiser Permanente.
