Early suburb of Baltimore maintains its green spirit
Once a summer retreat for wealthy Baltimoreans in the early 19th century, Mt Washington quickly became one of the area’s first suburbs. Tucked away in a thicket of natural beauty and charming homes, an ultimate love for nature and serenity remains the status quo. With a canopy of tree leaves covering a convergence of multiple babbling brooks, Mt Washington offers a truly relaxing spot. However, all the conveniences of city life are next door yet still maintain the area's old-timey mill town atmosphere. “A lot of tree coverage means more animals—deer, fox—and a more walkable neighborhood," says Naomi Reetz, a longtime resident and Realtor with Cummings & Co. "It’s not as concrete-heavy.”

Old-timey designs accented by garden plots
Mt Washington is a verdant menagerie of home designs that charm observers with unique details, trimmed lawns and kaleidoscopic flowerbeds. Imposing American Foursquares with wraparound porches loom over hilly lawns across curving streets from red brick Tudor-styles with steep roof pitches and half-timber siding. Stately Colonial Revivals with ionic columns and second-story overhangs sit across from wood shingle siding Cape Cods. There are contemporary designs too, including townhomes, midcentury ranchers and split-levels, some of which are retrofitted as condos and apartments, and even a handful of modern designs. “Because there are so many different styles available, it captures a lot of price points, which is nice for families of all backgrounds,” says Reetz. For larger four- and five-bedroom houses, prices can quickly move into the low $700,000s, while smaller red brick townhomes start in the low $300,000s.

Blue Ribbon schools with green initiatives
The Mount Washington School is a public institution with a B-minus Niche score. Serving less than 600 students in grades K-8, the school is divided into two campuses—the upper and lower schools—and includes a Green Committee, which incorporates environmental sustainability practices and policies. By 9th grade, students can choose where they attend high school. Many attend the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, a Blue Ribbon public high school with an A-minus Niche score. Considered to have the 12th-best teachers in Maryland, the school keeps students engaged with many STEM-based classes and extracurriculars, including the national program Project Lead the Way.

Community gardens galore
“Another huge perk of living in Mt. Washington is the parks," says Reetz. "We have Northwest Park and Luckman Park. Northwest gives you the soccer fields and baseball diamonds, which adds to the neighborly feel." Luckman meanwhile provides a cozy playground for the area's children. Perhaps the most sacred kind of park in Mt Washington, however, is the community garden, of which there are plenty scattered throughout the neighborhood, as well as the Mt. Washington Arboretum. Not to mention 500 acres of woodlands and wetlands with hiking trails to explore are located about 2 miles north of Mt Washington at Lake Roland Park, which even has an off-leash area for dogs.
Lake Roland Park is great for fishing, boating or just relaxing by the water.
Mt. Washington Arboretum is also home to a community garden.

Antique shopping centers with Whole Foods
Two shopping areas in Mt Washington mirror each other on opposite sides of Interstate 83. The Mt. Washington Village shopping center is home to several restaurants. Ethel's Creole Kitchen is where locals enjoy seafood that departs from the traditions of their home state in exchange for spicy Creole delicacies like gumbo and jambalaya. East of the Interstate is the Washington Mill Dye House. Built in 1810, the red brick building is the third-oldest cotton mill in the U.S., now used as an event venue. Other mill buildings surrounding it comprise a shopping center with an expansive Whole Foods Market, a Starbucks location and Jupiter's, a local hotspot for ice cream.

Options afforded by light rail and buses
Interstate 83 flanks Mt Washington to the east, offering trips to downtown Baltimore and northward connections with the 695 Beltway for trips around the county. Residents are also served by a Light RailLink stop at the Mt Washington Center, offering trips north to Hunt Valley Towne Centre and south to BWI Marshall Airport. Some bus routes also service the neighborhood, though these are contained to major roads.
Mt Washington's Light Rail station makes it easy to commute around the city.
The Jones Falls Light Rail Station in Mt. Washington serves as a great alternative to driving into the city.

Always outside
Community building in Mt Washington is all about coupling people with nature. The Lake Roland Nature Center provides many activities, such as Saturday yoga classes and Friday walking groups, educational exhibits on local flora and fauna, and frequent volunteer opportunities. Locals can also get involved with the Mount Washington Preservation Trust if they wish to volunteer closer to home, help beautify the numerous community gardens around their neighborhood or attend community courses at the local arboretum.
