A historic neighborhood in West Baltimore
This west Baltimore neighborhood was once the quintessential route for herding swine from the railcar to the slaughterhouse. One hundred years later, pigs no longer roam the tightly packed streets; however, the name Pigtown has been fondly embraced by the community. Today the neighborhood is known as an up-and-coming spot where folks look forward to living. “It’s a mix of new and old,” says Joseph Laumann, a Realtor and team lead at RE/MAX Town Center who has been selling homes in the area for 21 years. “There are lots of row houses and local businesses, but there are a lot of families there, too. People who move there really love it, so they stay.” Despite an 8 out of 10 CAP Index score, higher than the national average of 4, Pigtown remains a popular landing spot for young families who wish to be in the middle of Charm City’s vibrant atmosphere.

The many delights of Washington Boulevard
The commercial corridor along Washington Boulevard effectively serves as Pigtown’s Main Street, offering restaurants, locally owned businesses and convenience stores. Locals stop into Main Street Mart for a quick sandwich and a bag of Crab Chips before heading up to Culinary Architecture, a small grocery store that makes an outsized impact on the community with its selection of freshly baked bread, unique canned goods and specialty sauces. On Monday nights, residents visit the popular haunt Fielder’s Tavern for cold beers, stand-up comedy and good eats. For pinball and live music, Wico Street Beer Company on Wicomico Street stands at the ready.

Row homes in Charm City
This neighborhood was originally designed to house the rail workers of the B&O railroad, with all 36 blocks primarily made up of traditional Baltimore row houses. Prospective owners can choose from two- and three-story brick homes, most of which were built in the early 1900s. “Lots of homes are different,” Laumann says. “Some are awaiting renovations, while others have been reworked completely, which affects the price point.” Prices begin around $135,000 and climb to around $275,000 when interiors have been fully redone.

From the Orioles to the “Squeekness”
Living in Pigtown, residents are constantly surrounded by the city's excitement. “The B&O Railroad Museum is a big part of Pigtown,” Laumann says. The museum houses some of the country’s oldest locomotives and allows visitors to take train rides. From spring to autumn, flocks of orange-clad Orioles fans are a common sight on the neighborhood’s streets. “The whole neighborhood is within walking distance of Camden Yards and M&T Bank Stadium,” Laumann adds. “It’s so close that the fans always take all the street parking when the Orioles are playing.” And of course, the Annual Pigtown Festival has drawn crowds to the community for over 20 years. Visitors and locals gather at the festival to jam to local bands, enjoy craft brews and watch the “Squeekness” pig races that honor Pigtown’s heritage.

The fields of Carroll Park
Residents spend time outdoors on the south end of the neighborhood at Carroll Park. This extensive green space is among the oldest in Baltimore, featuring basketball courts, picnic areas, athletic fields and a 9-hole golf course. The park is a weekend gathering point for locals when the weather is nice. There is also a community garden available here where neighbors can rent plots to grow their own vegetables, flowers and herbs.
Carroll Park has four baseball diamonds to practice on.

Pigtown is zoned for Baltimore City Public Schools. Children begin at Charles Carroll Barrister Elementary, which earns a C-minus from Niche and holds an annual Book Blast. During this book drive event, every student goes home with new reading material. The closest public middle school option is Morrell Park Elementary/Middle School, which scores a C. Morrell Park allows students to participate in the Beat the Streets Academic and Wrestling Camp after school, where they can learn both the sport of wrestling and Swahili, Africa’s most widely spoken language. The Vivien T. Thomas Medical Arts Academy, which is the closest high school to Pigtown, is rated C and supports career pathways in the medical sciences. Here, students can prepare for roles in emergency medicine, nursing and dental assistantships.

Getting around Charm City
Pigtown sits directly at the end of Route 295, also known as the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. This highway is the most direct route to Baltimore Washington International Airport 16 miles away, and it continues on to the heart of Washington, D.C. Residents also have access to Interstate 95, which can provide an alternative when 295 is backed up.
Birthplace of Babe Ruth
In addition to its history as a major stop on the B&O Railroad, Pigtown is famous for being the birthplace of baseball legend Babe Ruth. An unassuming brick row house just two blocks away from Camden Yards now serves as a museum honoring the Sultan of Swat. Visitors can wander the halls admiring memorabilia spanning Ruth’s entire career.
