Dundalk's oldest neighborhood
A residential pocket nestled amidst industry, Saint Helena calls itself Dundalk’s oldest neighborhood “and is a very blue-collar, working-class neighborhood,” explains Fred Golding, a Realtor with RE/MAX, who has sold nearly two dozen homes in Dundalk. “A lot of residents work at the port nearby.” Opened in 1990, the Seagirt Marine Terminal is one of the area’s central employers, providing more than 15,000 jobs, and a landmark that’s hard to miss. From afar, its enormous cranes make moving cargo look like a colorful game of Tetris.

Densely packed 20th-century homes
Like most neighborhoods in the greater Baltimore area, Saint Helena offers plenty of 1920s and ‘30s rowhomes, with three bedrooms and 1.5 bathrooms, priced in the low- to mid-$100,000s. For standalone single-family homes, styles range from minimalist bungalows to moderately sized American Foursquares and shotgun houses. Prices for these options range from $125,000 to $370,000, depending on the size and renovations made to the home. Saint Helena’s grid-like streets are lined with sidewalks, and while there are a few pockets of green, yards are small and vary from well-kept lawns to simple low-maintenance plots of grass. Homes are often set close together, and almost all feature short chain-link or picket fences to create some separation.
Saint Helena has a variety of home styles to choose from.

I-95 connects locals to downtown Baltimore
Due to Saint Helena’s densely populated urban-suburban feel, many residents move there because “it’s convenient,” Golding says. “You can get straight into the city, around Dundalk and the outer parts of the county, too.” Interstate 95 can connect commuters to downtown Baltimore. People also take the freeway for nearly 15.5 miles to Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. Maryland Transit Administration bus stops are also nearby, with several routes running along Dundalk Avenue. The closest hospital is The Johns Hopkins Hospital, about 5.5. miles away via Boston Street.

Family-owned eateries, dive bars and a vintage bowling alley
Commercial pockets are tucked along Dundalk Avenue, including gas stations, pharmacies, mini-marts and fast-food options. Family-owned Squire’s Italian Restaurant has been serving pizza and pasta to locals since the early 1950s. People also frequent Dunbar Tavern on Sundays to catch a Baltimore Ravens game. Seating is limited in the small dive bar with a pool table and vintage jukebox. For a fun night out, locals head to Pinland Bowling Lanes. The old-school duckpin spot does bowling the traditional way, with projector screens for scoring and equipment that will make you feel like you’ve traveled back in time. For groceries, locals can shop at Weis Market or the Save-A-Lot within a 2-mile vicinity.

Community parks honor Saint Helena's history
The neighborhood’s titular park spans 16 acres and features one of two playgrounds in the area. The other is situated at the corner of Parnell and Ralls avenues. The green space also features baseball diamonds and a fenced-in space, giving pups room to roam. Locals can get fresh air and learn more about the area’s history at Cimaglia Park at Fort Holabird. The fort dubs itself the birthplace of the military jeep and was a testing site for the vehicles used during war. It was also used to guard witnesses in major federal cases like the Watergate hearings. The space was redeveloped in the 1970s and now features basketball courts, ball fields and a community garden.

Model trains roll through Christmas village
The Dundalk-Patapsco Neck Historical Society honors the area’s past and allows for connection among community members through seasonal events. Its claim to fame is the Community Train Garden, which has existed for over 20 years. An intricate 350-square-foot display is lined with model train tracks that pass by Christmas villages, miniature versions of Baltimore landmarks and through tunnels named for area historical locations. The site also hosts flea markets in the spring and fall, and around the holidays, people come together for Luminary Night to light candles, sing Christmas carols and enjoy warm cider.
