Westgate’s suburban feel and convenience of city life
The neighborhood of Westgate in Southwest Baltimore maintains much of its initial charm from the 1930s. “Westgate is a quaint area where you’ve got some great historic homes east of Catonsville and Ellicott City,” says Trish May, a Realtor with Jason Mitchell Group. She’s on the board of the Westgate Community Association and is a proud local. “Westgate homes tend to be bungalows, Colonials and foursquare homes, and although the lots are a little smaller, the people are much more close-knit.” Prospective buyers looking to own in Westgate can choose from single-family homes in minimalist styles, like cozy bungalows, cottages and American Foursquare. Home prices average around $250,000, which is higher than in nearby Beechfield and Tremont but lower than in Ten Hills. Students study within the Baltimore City Public Schools system, which is graded an overall C-plus on Niche. Locals can take the Baltimore National Pike to shop at one of several nearby plazas and shopping centers. For history fans, the Baltimore National Cemetery is on the south side of the neighborhood.
1930s Westgate homes and newer apartments
Traditional brick Colonials and cottages with gambrel roofs and wooden siding line the streets of Westgate. Several properties can be dated back to the 1930s, featuring hardwood floors and original architecture, but most have been updated to meet modern standards. Many residences have sizeable front and back yards with both street and driveway parking. These single-family homes often range between $270,000 and $450,000. For cozier options, duplexes and row townhouses in traditional Baltimore styles have narrow red-brick facades and short front stoops. Three-bedroom units can often cost between $175,000 and $275,000. Short-term residents can also take advantage of the housing and playground at the Jamestowne Apartments and Townhomes community in the center of town.

Westview and Ingleside shopping centers on National Baltimore Pike
All along the Baltimore National Pike in nearby Catonsville are several shopping and dining options for Westgate residents. Whether running errands at Lowe’s and Sam’s Club or spending a night out at Iron Age for tabletop Korean barbecue, locals will find dozens of places to go after work or on weekends. The Hub Asian Food Hall is a food court with several businesses serving dishes like Taiwanese bubble tea, Japanese stir fry and Korean street food. The Crepe Escape and Creamery has sweet and savory crepe flavors. For a retro vibe, Double T Diner feels like a 1950s lunch counter serving classic American breakfast.

The Westgate Community Association's events and gatherings
The Westgate Community Association works hard to keep neighbors together and give them space to gather and socialize. “I’m on the board of the community association, and we do a lot of fun things,” May says. “We host special events in the park, like an easter egg hunt or a s’mores day when it’s chilly in the fall or heading into winter. We also have yard sales in the park where people can bring things to sell or give away. Our Cookie Exchange in December in the park is when people can bring cookies or recipes and cookie swap with each other.” The association also takes time to host a monthly happy hour at Iampieri's Bar. “It’s a total community place... If you’re a neighbor, you don’t have to be part of the Westgate Community Association to participate. If you live in Westgate or used to live in Westgate, you’re welcome.”
Public and private Westgate schools
Students in Westgate can first attend either Thomas Jefferson Elementary/Middle School or North Bend Elementary/Middle School. Both schools teach kindergarten through eighth grade and are recognized by the State of Maryland with the Excellence in Gifted and Talented Education (EGATE) Award. Edmonson-Westside High School offers college prep and career pathways for its students, including work-study programs and dual enrollment opportunities. All three schools are graded a C-minus on Niche. For alternative options, private schools like Mount Saint Joseph High School, an all-boys preparatory school, is less than 2 miles east and is graded an A on Niche.
Thomas Jefferson Elementary-Middle serves approximately 300 students.
Edmondson-Westside high School is located near the Hunting Ridge and Uplands communities.

Baltimore National Cemetary and Leakin Park playground and trails
On North Bend Road is Westgate’s small park, which has a few playscapes, some shaded seating and a little free library. “The Patapsco River is close to where we are, and along the river, there are multiple state parks. Because of the hilly terrain, they’re great for hiking and mountain biking,” May says. “Patapsco Valley State Park is where most of us tend to go.” The neighborhood’s proximity to the Baltimore National Cemetary is great for history buffs looking to take a stroll. Famous occupants of the cemetery include John Wilkes Booth, John Hopkins and Enoch Pratt.
Westgate Park is a small green space with fun amenities like lined up tires and toy trucks.
Go for a dip in the Patapsco River at Patapsco Valley State Park.

CityLink buses and commutes to downtown Baltimore
Residents can travel 6 miles east on the CityLink bus's purple line to get to Downtown Baltimore. Westgate is “really conveniently positioned with public transportation to the colleges in town and into the city by taking the bus line,” May says. There are also plenty of biking and walking trails around town, including the Trolley Trails, the Streetcar Path, and the Short Line Railroad Trail. “You could bike yourself from Westgate all the way to Ellicott City if you wanted. We’re close to the Trolley Trails, which were paved over but are now really lovely walking paths. They’re great for walking dogs or for people who want to ride their bikes.” For emergencies and checkups, Johns Hopkins Hospital is about 7 miles away in Baltimore’s downtown, while Ascension St Agnes Hospital is about 3 miles south. For weekends away, the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is 10 miles south via Interstate 195.
