An old-school neighborhood in Northeast Baltimore
Woodring is a small Northeast Baltimore neighborhood that brings a sentimental atmosphere to Charm City. “It’s very old-school,” says Realtor JR Smith, broker and owner at Exit Realty who has been selling real estate in the area for over 30 years. “You’ll see people out mowing lawns and communicating with one another. It gives you that county feeling, some of the nostalgia of just walking down the street to the store.” This community is speckled with detached single-family homes and duplexes, setting it apart from Baltimore neighborhoods where row houses reign supreme. Yet despite the suburban guise, Woodring does not feel isolated from the convenience of the city. “It’s a community-friendly center in the city,” Smith continues. “There’s more elbow room here than you might get elsewhere.”

Between the county line and Baltimore City
Woodring greets prospective owners with a selection of red brick duplexes and single-family homes in a variety of styles. Bungalows, ranch-styles and larger American Foursquare houses line the streets, sitting back from the sidewalks and overlooking medium-sized front yards. Many single-family homes feature driveways and fenced-in backyards as well. “Parking is great because everyone has a driveway,” Smith says. “You don’t have to worry too much about street parking.” Duplexes range in price from around $160,000 to $250,000, while detached units begin around $200,000 and rise as high as $375,000. Because Woodring is so close to the Baltimore County line, residents may notice an extra envelope in the mail. “Some people can end up getting two property tax bills – one from the city, one from the county,” Smith explains. “Things get rezoned all the time up here.”

Coffee and pizza on Harford Road
Along Harford Road, locals can shop for groceries at Giant, pick up household necessities at Walgreens or grab a cup of Baltimore’s favorite coffee at Zeke’s. “You’ll see people walking down the street to get a cup of coffee and read a book,” Smith says. “And if you’re a foodie-type, there’s all kinds of restaurants around.” One of the most popular is Olympia Masala, an Indian-Greek-American fusion restaurant that has been a staple of nearby Parkville for over 20 years. This deli is plugged into their surrounding community, sponsoring local Little League teams and participating in events and festivals annually. “Olympia makes some of the best pizza I’ve tasted in a long time,” Smith adds. The pizza is among the most favored menu items, with toppings ranging from traditional pepperoni and sausage to chicken tikka masala.

Baltimore City schools
Children in Woodring attend Baltimore City public schools such as Garrett Heights Elementary/Middle School, which scores a C-minus from Niche and is a gifted and advanced learning site. Students may then proceed to their choice of the city’s public high schools. Among the closest is City Neighbors High School, a public charter school founded in 2010 that earns a C. CNHS employs a project-based learning method emphasizing the completion of creative projects throughout the year. The neighborhood is also close to Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical High School, rated C-minus, which serves over 1,600 students and offers both a college-preparatory curriculum and the opportunity to earn industry certifications.

The home of Hamilton Baseball
Keyes Field on Moyer Avenue has been home to Hamilton Baseball since 1950. This 100 percent volunteer-led program maintains four baseball diamonds between Woodring and its neighboring communities and is dedicated to using the game of baseball to promote strong values in area youth. Four miles south of the neighborhood, locals enjoy strolling on the paved 1.5-mile walking path or playing disc golf on the lawn around Lake Montebello.
Harford Road, Northern Parkway and the Interstates
Harford Road is the community’s major north-south road, connecting Woodring to Interstate 695 and Parkville 3 miles to the north. Northern Parkway, which runs east to Bel Air Road and west to Interstate 83, is the neighborhood’s other thoroughfare. Residents also enjoy easy access to Interstate 95, which provides the most direct route to Baltimore Washington International Airport 23 miles south.
All about the Inner Harbor
Woodring is a 7-mile drive from Baltimore’s famous Inner Harbor, where orange-clad locals gather for Orioles games at Camden Yards and families wander through the halls of the National Aquarium. There’s also the Maryland Science Center, home to one of the largest IMAX movie screens in the country. This immense theater screens everything from nature documentaries and planetarium showings to the latest blockbuster films.
The Maryland Science Center is great for all ages and has an IMAX theater.
There are few shops left at Harborplace, but the area is in the process of redevelopment.
