In Louisiana's East Baton Rouge Parish is the residential haven of Shenandoah. "The area is about 20 minutes from Louisiana State University. It's pretty suburban and has a lot of families. There are a good bit of parks and restaurants in that part of the parish," says a previous LSU student, Breanna Green. The community is a census-designated place containing many subdivisions with ample housing options. On game days, local fans travel to Tiger Stadium and chant "Geaux Tigers," a phrase meaning "Go Tigers," as a nod to the area's Cajun roots. Locals also visit the fairways at Santa Maria Golf Course or play tennis at the local athletics club for fun closer to home. Students in Shenandoah also have access to a number of public schools and high-performing faith-based options.
A community with many subdivisions
While traveling through Shenandoah, locals see homes ranging from modern constructions to those dating back over 50 years. Along the streets are distinguished Cape Cods and colonial-inspired houses with wideset porches. There are also many simple ranch homes throughout the community. Shenandoah Estates subdivision contains some of the most established properties in the community. Contemporary dwellings show new traditional forms that blend different architectural styles. These properties are found inside the Carriagewood Estates, Audubon Square and Shadows Lake subdivisions. Those looking for attached housing options can score a unit inside the High Cross Townhomes development.
Townhouses generally list between $125,00 and $250,000. Detached houses can enter the market as low as $200,000; however, some well-maintained estates and residences over 3,000 square feet can cost over $1 million. Sections of the parish are prone to flooding, and the local government has recently updated the East Baton Rouge Flood Risk Reduction Project to mitigate the effects of natural disasters.
