Beaumont, Orange and Port Arthur are a cluster of cities in Southeast Texas known as the Golden Triangle. The nickname originated in the early 1900s after the Spindletop oil well erupted. The gusher revealed a wealth of oil beneath the surface, making the owners of the land extremely wealthy and, hence, the Golden Triangle was born. This event also kicked off a major population boom in Beaumont, attracting job seekers from afar. South Park was one of the original neighborhoods to house the Port of Beaumont’s oil field and refinery workers.
A century ago, having a South Park address meant that you had job security. Later, suburban sprawl left parts of the community neglected and in disrepair. Recently, the neighborhood has been experiencing a second wind. There’s a romanticism associated with South Park's history and humble beginnings. These are layers that residents have the opportunity to peel back when they visit the Spindletop museum, or just by talking to neighbors and listening to their stories.
This area's new and established homes feature similar styles
South Park’s earliest homes were small bungalows and cottages. Over the years, and after a few catastrophic storms, less sturdy homes were replaced by newer versions, but in the same cozy, architectural styles. Even in the 2020s, South Park’s atmosphere is reminiscent of the neighborhood’s earliest days. The streets of South Park are still lined with low-slung ranch houses. Some stand out more than others with bright teal, green and golden yellow hues.
The median cost of housing in South Park is $175,000. On the higher end, you’ll find newer homes from the last few decades, while houses from the 60’s and 70’s are more moderately priced. There are also a fair number of old homes and empty lots on the market waiting for buyers and new construction.
Locals have multiple nearby schools, including a public university
There are three public schools in South Park: Blanchette Elementary School; Pietzsch-MacArthur, for students in pre-K through eighth grade; and South Park Middle School. Parents also have the option of enrolling kids in Beaumont’s private and public charter schools.
Lamar University, a well-regarded institution of higher learning that’s part of the Texas State University System, is located on the east side of South Park. Over the past few years, the administration has been committed to launching a variety of community improvement projects, such as converting old buildings into residential housing. The University’s Dishman Art Museum doubles as a teaching facility and a gallery, featuring historic artifacts of 19th- and 20th-century works by students, alumni, and artists from around the world.
South Park features community playgrounds and basketball courts
South Park might be dense with housing, but it has a lot of green space. There are also two dedicated neighborhood parks. Chaison Park has a playground, a covered picnic area, a baseball diamond and basketball courts. Alice Keith Park on Reed Street has a playground and pool, plus basketball and tennis courts. Residents can rent the community center and kitchen at Alice Keith Park for personal events.
Boomtown Museum is a glimpse into the past
One place South Park locals must visit is the Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum, located near the site of the original Spindletop gusher. The museum is a re-creation of turn-of-the-century Beaumont, complete with a post office, saloon, print shop and livery. Present-day residents have amenities like the H-E-B on College Street at their disposal, a very easy commute from all corners of Beaumont.
