Large homes close to major cities

Bedford, 15 minutes from Manchester and an hour from Boston, makes commuting easy. “It’s transient in the sense that people come in with a high-end job and have a tendency to relocate a little more because they’re highly sought-after,” says Kelly Black, a broker associate at Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate The Masiello Group. Homes in the area are impressive in stature and sit on large, well-manicured lots. The area is thick with greenery, interrupted by wide roadways. Homes circulate large cul de sacs shooting off the main thoroughfare. The area has no sidewalks, as the location relies heavily on cars.

Contemporary colonials and Colonial Revivals

Homes in the area are in the contemporary colonial and Colonial Revival styles, ranging in price from $550,000 to $825,000. Newly constructed or renovated homes with three or more rooms range in price from $850,000 to $2 million. Homes in the area sit on large lots, and anything over 2 acres rises in price. “They have the brick-facing colonials, the three-car garages and the in-ground pools,” says Black.

A-rated schools

Children attend Memorial Elementary School and continue to McKelvie Intermediate School for middle school. Students complete secondary school at Bedford High School. All schools receive an A rating on Niche and are rated among the best public schools in New Hampshire.

Open spaces and nature preserves

The town of Bedford has the Bedford Open Space Plan to help manage, protect and care for the open spaces in the Bedford area. Most open space areas contain an abundance of trees and wildlife. There are also several nature preserves in the area. A popular bird-watching spot, Pulpit Rock Conservation Area is a 338-acre property with natural waterfalls, outcroppings and wetlands. Visitors can also find handmade stick forts, rock sculptures and walkways. The Joppa Hill Educational Farm connects visitors to New Hampshire’s agricultural past. The farm is on public land and run by the town of Bedford and the barn cat, Jellybean. The farm hosts school field trips, summer camps, food prep classes and agricultural fairs. For more recreational spaces, Bedford Memorial Park Pool is a public swimming pool next to Sportsman Field, an open area featuring a soccer field, tennis courts and baseball fields. On the other side of the sports fields is Ann DeNicola Memorial Playground, a play area with play structures next to an open field.

Bedford Highlands and Market and Main

For shopping, Bedford Highlands has a Target and a Lowe’s, with some commercial dining areas nearby. Locals grocery shop at Market and Main, which houses a Whole Foods and a Trader Joe’s in an old Macy’s. Nearby, is the Friendly Toast, an all day breakfast location with lime-green walls and eclectic décor. There are other shops and eateries along South River Road and Route 101.

Interstates and Manchester-Boston Regional Airport

I-293, which runs on the east side of town, merges with I-93 just north of Manchester, providing easy access to Concord and the ski mountains of northern New Hampshire. The Bedford area is also ten minutes from the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport.

Spooky World

Across the Merrimack River, Spooky World: Nightmare New England is the largest haunted attraction in New England, spanning 80 acres. Open in the fall, Spooky World offers four eerie experiences: games, fire pits and other fall-themed activities.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
